Padres Down on the Farm: May 31 (Storm walk-off in 11)
The San Diego Padres affiliates went 3-1 on Friday night.Â
Here is a recap of the evening’s action.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 9-1 vs Round Rock) (22-33 on the season)
Eguy Rosario – (2-for-5) Double, Triple, 2 RBI
Cal Mitchell – (3-for-5) RBI Single
Daniel Camarena – 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K (76 pitches, 47 strikes)
El Paso struck early to take a commanding lead and never looked back, winning 9-1 vs Round Rock. Daniel Camaerna started for El Paso and gave the team his best outing of the season. Camarena tossed five innings of one-run ball, striking out four across the way. Chihuahuas starters haven’t had a great stretch recently, so an outing like this inspires confidence in the rotation. The bullpen fared equally as well, with Tommy Nance, Tom Cosgrove, and Nick Hernandez combining for four shutout innings. Hernandez is worth noting, as he has a 1.90 ERA across 23.2 innings this season.Â
The offense had a breakout game as well, with 13 hits total across nine innings. Cal Mitchell recorded three hits, and Eguy Rosario continued his tear with two extra-base hits. Brett Sullivan only recorded one hit but would walk twice in the game. Graham Pauley would be one of two starters to go hitless, but he would walk as well.Â
San Antonio Missions (Lost 4-1 vs RoughRiders) (22-26 on the season)
Robert Perez Jr – (1-for-4) RBI Double
Robbie Tenerowicz – (2-for-3) Double, Run Scored
Austin Krob – 5 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K (87 pitches, 52 strikes)
The Missions lost a winnable game in San Antonio today, with the offense being stymied by RoughRiders pitcher Nick Krauth. The Missions’ bats would only record six hits across the nine-inning affair, with their lone run coming across on a double by Robert Perez Jr in the fourth. The rest of the offense did not have a great day, as the team would only have four total opportunities with runners in scoring position, cashing in only once.Â
Austin Krob took the mound for the Missions and pitched five strong innings. Krob’s only blemish was in the second inning, where back-to-back singles were followed up by a three-run homer to put Frisco up 3-0. Krob would record four strikeouts in the game, keeping the game in reach. It was a solid cap to the month of May for him as well, as he posted a 2.45 ERA in four May starts.Â
Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 4-3 vs Visalia in 10 innings) ((22-27 on the season)
Devin Ortiz – (2-for-5)
Jay Beshears – (2-for-4) Go Ahead RBI
Henry Baez – 3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K (52 pitches, 35 strikes)
The Fort Wayne TinCaps mounted a late-inning rally to win against the Visalia Timber Rattlers. Griffin Doersching’s game-tying double would set the stage for the tenth-inning go-ahead sac fly by Jay Beshears. The TinCaps were able to capitalize on opportunities in the later innings, almost negating a 2-for-12 performance with runners in scoring position.Â
On the hill, Henry Baez had a shorter start, going only three innings. However, he pitched relatively well, flashing the potential of his fastball/slurve combo. The bullpen for the TinCaps held the door, with Ruben Galindo’s three innings of one-run ball leaving just enough room for the offense to come across for the win.Â
Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 8-7 vs Rancho Cucamonga in 11 innings) (24-23 on the season)
Jose Sanabria – (2-for-4) 2 Runs
Nick Vogt – (2-for-5) Walk-Off Single
Eric Yost – 3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 5 K (68 pitches, 36 strikes)
In a wild back-and-forth affair, the Storm pulled out a win against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in 11 innings. Eric Yost started for Lake Elsinore but struggled with his command, walking four and hitting a batter. Despite his ineffective start, Will Varmette and Kobe Robinson threw five scoreless innings to keep the team in the game. Keegan Collett had a rough tenth but clutched up in the eleventh inning to keep the team afloat.
Offensively, Leodalis De Vries continued his torrid pace, with two runs batted in. Chase Valentine recorded two hits again, scoring twice. Ryan Wilson hit his first homer in the season in the game, a go-ahead shot in the sixth.. It would be outfielder Nick Vogt who would steal the show, recording a walk-off single in the eleventh, raining down cheers onto The Diamond at Lake Elsinore.Â
