Padres affiliates went 4-3 on Thursday,

Let’s jump right into the day’s action.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 7-6 in 10 innings vs Round Rock) (29-37 on the season)

Nate Mondou – 2-for-4, Double, Two RBI

Nick Pratto – 1-for-4, Home Run, RBI

JP Sears – 5.1 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 1 K (92 pitches – 61 strikes)

El Paso swiped away a road win in ten innings, taking the game by a 7-6 final (or 6-7 if you’re a youngin’). Nate Mondou hit a two-run double to open the scoring for El Paso, finishing with two hits and two RBI. Nick Pratto launched a solo home run against his former team, taking Express starter Trey Supak deep. El Paso trailed 5-4 in the eighth inning, but Nick Solak drove in Pablo Reyes on a base hit to right field. Marcos Castanon then drove in the go-ahead run thanks to a misplay from Jonah Bride at third base, which allowed Solak to score. Even after the Express tied the game, El Paso took the lead on a wild pitch from Alexis Diaz. Carlos Rodriguez came in to score on the wild pitch, and his score was the decisive run in the affair.

JP Sears threw 5.1 innings but allowed four runs on nine hits. Sears struck out just one, leaving his outing’s fate up to the defense behind him. The Chihuahuas’ southpaw gave up 23 batted balls, with eight coming off the bat over 95 mph. Sears surrendered more barrels than the number of whiffs he induced (five). Michael Flynn struck out the two batters he faced and has struck out 23 in 19.2 innings this season. Alek Jacob threw two innings of one-run baseball, generating whiffs on 55% of swings against him. Kyle Hart blew the save in the ninth, but rebounded to earn the win and close out the game with a scoreless tenth. Hart’s fastball averaged a staggering 95.1 mph, maxing out at 95.9. While this velocity bump is notable, could it get him back to the Majors?

San Antonio Missions (Lost 6-3 vs Frisco) (25-35 on the season)

Albert Fabian – 1-for-4, Two-Run Home Run

Ryan Jackson – 3-for-4, Three Singles, Stolen Base, Run Scored

Miguel Mendez – 4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 1 K (81 pitches – 53 strikes)

The RoughRiders roughed up Missions starter Miguel Mendez on Thursday, scoring five runs in four innings against the right-hander. Mendez allowed six hits, two of which went for extra bases. The right-hander picked up 12 swings and misses, but recorded just one strikeout. Omar Cruz threw three innings of one-run baseball in relief, striking out a whopping eight batters. All but one out recorded by the left-hander came via the strikeout. Andrew Moore pitched two innings with two strikeouts, but also walked two.

Ryan Jackson had what could be a breakthrough game, as the Missions’ second baseman finished with three hits. Jackson hit three singles, also stealing a base. Albert Fabian’s two-run home run was the Missions’ first home run of the series, scoring Francisco Acuna. Acuna hit an RBI double in the second inning, which scored Jackson. Braedon Karpathios returned to the lineup, finishing 1-for-3 with a single and a walk. Karpathios also stole his fourth base of the season. Ethan Salas was held hitless in the loss.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 5-4 vs Dayton) (24-36 on the season)

Kavares Tears – 2-for-4, Double, RBI

Kasen Wells – 2-for-4, Two Singles, Two RBI

Carson Montgomery – 4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 6 K (73 pitches – 45 strikes)

Carson Montgomery threw four innings in his latest start, striking out six batters. Montgomery picked up 13 swings and misses in the game, but also allowed a pair of home runs. Despite the home runs, Montgomery was successful at generating weak contact outside of the long ball. The right-hander now has a 24.2% strikeout rate, but has also walked 12.9% of opponents this season. Braian Salazar allowed one run in one inning, and the duo of Javier Chacon & Tucker Musgrove combined for two scoreless innings. Clay Edmondson pitched a scoreless eighth but only recorded one out in the ninth, walking two. With two on and one out, manager Jonathan Matthews removed Edmondson, turning to CJ Widger out of the bullpen. Widger plunked the first man he faced to load the bases, but picked up number two with a strikeout. On a 2-2 pitch, Dayton outfielder Kien Vu broke for the plate, and Widger’s throw home was way high, allowing Vu to score and the Dragons to walk off.

Kavares Tears continued to hit, as the TinCaps’ right fielder had himself a multi-hit game. Tears’ single in the eighth inning tied the game at four runs apiece. Kasen Wells hit two singles, driving in a run on a single and another on a groundout. Justin DeCriscio hit a run-scoring groundout in the seventh inning to drive in another run. Alex McCoy hit a single and walked once, scoring two of the TinCaps’ four runs. Jake Cunningham went 1-for-4 with a single and has reached base safely in eight of his first nine games in June. Rosman Verdugo reached base twice in the loss.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 10-8 in 10 innings vs Ontario) (34-26 on the season)

Jorge Quintana – 1-for-3, RBI Single, Two Walks

Ryan Wideman – 1-for-6, Double, Two RBI

Bryan Balzer –  6 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 4 K (90 pitches – 52 strikes)

In a California League classic, Lake Elsinore unfortunately came down on the losing end. The Storm drew 10 walks in the loss, tallying four doubles as part of a nine-hit attack. Ryan Wideman drove in two runs with a double in the fourth inning. Conner Westenburg hit an RBI double in the game, also making a Catch of the Year-worthy play in the third inning. Luke Cantwell doubled and drove in a run. The Storm’s designated hitter also scored three runs in the ballgame. Bradley Frye reached base four times in the game, scoring one run. Shortstop Jorge Quintana drew two walks, but also hit a sixth-inning RBI single to put the Storm ahead.

Bryan Balzer threw six innings on 90 pitches against the Tower Buzzers, striking out four. The right-hander’s stuff continues to show impressive movement, though his issues with home runs have persisted. Balzer allowed a two-run home run in the second inning. Nonetheless, the right-hander has continued to provide volume in terms of innings. With this start, Balzer surpassed his previous career-high in innings pitched. Carson Swilling allowed two runs on two walks in relief, and Will Koger allowed one run on three walks in 1.1 innings. Sean Barnett picked up the final out of the ninth, but allowed two runs in the tenth inning.

ACL Padres (Won 10-7 in 10 innings vs ACL Rangers) (16-13 on the season)

Dawson Willis – 2-for-5, Two Home Runs, Four RBI

Jesmaylin Arias – 2-for-4, Home Run, RBI

Zack Qin – 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K

The Padres took their 16th win of the season in extra innings. Dawson Willis led the charge with two home runs; the Padres DH’s second home run was of the go-ahead variety. Willis’ four home runs lead the ACL Padres. Jesmaylin Arias also launched a home run, his second of the season. Luis De Leon singled twice, scoring two runs. Moises Valdez drove in two runs on a hit and a walk, scoring two runs.

Zack Qin continued to build up as a starter, pitching four innings of one-run baseball. Qin allowed one run on a solo homer, striking out two. Qin has shown pinpoint command since coming back from injury, and is likely to rejoin Single-A Lake Elsinore at some point this season. Dalvi Nunez allowed two runs in two innings, and Florangel Vasquez struck out five in two innings. Vasquez allowed two runs in two innings, but with the Padres’ 10th inning rally, it mattered not. Yoesmerli Beltre picked up the win with two innings of two-run baseball, striking out two.
