SAN JOSE, Calif.–

The San Diego State Aztecs completed their second conference sweep this season with a 2-0 victory over San Jose State.

The Aztecs were led to victory by successful pitching all week long, and on Saturday, they got a similar heroic effort from Omar Serrano.

Serrano dazzled for his best start of the year, pitching a complete game shutout while only giving up four hits and striking out six. He was able to retire the Spartans in the ninth inning and finish the game with 134 pitches.

The Aztecs’ offensive attack was supported by Finley Bates and Drew Rutter, who each had an RBI today. Bates continues to be a solid presence atop the Aztecs’ batting order, as he improved his batting average to .276 with a 2-4 day.

CJ Moran had another successful afternoon with a 2-3 day as well, which saw his batting average skyrocket to .349, which is the team’s best.

Moran was another key contributor in the Aztecs’ 9-3 victory on Friday night, too, recording two RBIs. SDSU also got run support from Jake Jackson, whose two-hit day led to two more runs for the Scarlet and Black.

On the mound, the Aztecs got six solid innings from Aidan Russell, who netted his first win of the season. Russell only gave up two runs while striking out four. While only giving up three hits, he struggled with command a bit, which resulted in four walks, and crowded basepaths, yet he was able to wiggle out of trouble and exit the game with the lead.

Peyton Rodgers gave head coach Shaun Cole 1.2 innings out of the bullpen, while only surrendering two hits, before handing the ball to Xavier Cardenas to close the door. A clean ninth inning by Cardenas clinched the series win for the Aztecs.

Cardenas’ appearance Friday night was his second appearance of the series, as he successfully closed the Thursday night game to open the series on the right note for the Aztecs.

Garvey Rumary started game one for SDSU and picked up his second win of the season. Rumary pitched six innings, giving up two hits and one earned run. Rodgers once again bridged the gap between the starter and Cardenas, this time delivering two innings of scoreless work.

While the Aztec pitchers gave up two runs, they were supported by a cast of characters on the offensive side of the ball. Johnson cracked a solo home run, and Moran had an RBI single. The Aztecs picked up two more runs on a passed ball and a wild pitch, before an Evan Sipe sacrifice fly capped off the scoring effort. The Aztecs went on to win opening night 5-2.

Next up, SDSU travels across town to face the University of San Diego at Fowler Park on Monday, April 21. The Aztecs will return home to Tony Gwynn Stadium the next day, on Tuesday, April 22, to host Cal State Fullerton.
