Here is a look at who may be traded from the major league roster this week as the San Diego Padres prepare for the end of the 2025 season.
‘Tis the season—the time of the year when MLB teams obtain or trade players away.
The San Diego Padres are at a point where they may add or subtract this season. Although the team is in contention for the playoffs, there are whispers that they may not have much money to spend, if any. Times have changed since Peter Seidler owned the team. The late owner went the extra mile. The present group has yet to show that financial flexibility.
To upgrade the roster, it appears the Padres may need to adjust their salary. A few players are pending free agents, so that is not out of the realm of imagination.
A.J. Preller and his staff will need to be creative in the next couple of days. Not an issue as the G.M. is one of the craftiest in the league.

Let’s take a look at the roster and see who may be a casualty.
Dylan Cease– Odds- 50/50
It continues to be reported that the Padres are listening to offers for Dylan Cease. With no hope of re-signing him after the year, it is not the worst idea. The Padres are thin in the starting pitching department after the injuries to Yu Darvish and Michael King. It seems silly to entertain offers for Cease, but the thought process is that if they can replace him with a more inexpensive pitcher, they will have financial flexibility to strengthen the bench and possibly upgrade at catcher and left field.
Robert Suarez- Odds- 40 percent
With the suspension of Emmanuel Clause, Suarez may be the best relief pitcher who could be attained on the trade market. Why would San Diego deal Suarez? The same thought process as above, as Suarez is making a lot of money and has options for the coming seasons. Unlike a potential deal involving Cease, the Padres seem to have the internal players to withstand a loss of their closer. The bullpen is stacked, and the thinking is that Suarez may be easily replaced with Adrian Morejon or Jason Adam.
Wandy Peralta- Odds- 35 percent
Peralta has been one of the best relief pitchers throughout the last few months. His stuff is still excellent, but Peralta is making $4.25 million in 2025 and holds two player options for another two years, totaling just under $9 million. The Padres could use the extra cash. Peralta could be replaced on the roster with minor league lefties Omar Cruz or Jackson Wolf. Both are starting at the moment, but could easily transition into the bullpen.
Yuki Matsui- Odds- 25 percent
Like Peralta, Matsui is an expensive luxury for the Padres. He earns more than Perlata, as he is making $5.75 million this season and will then make $13 million for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. That extra cash could go a long way for the Padres. Matsui presently pitches in lower-leverage situations, and he could be replaced fairly easily. It is not clear what kind of value he has on the trade market. The Padres will explore dealing him, but it may be a difficult sell.
Jake Cronenworth– Odds- 25 percent
There were rumors that the Padres were exploring trading Jake Cronenworth. The infielder is having a productive year in 2025, but his numbers are still not overly impressive. The left-handed hitter is making $11.28 million this season and will make $12.28 million through the 2030 season. That is over $62 million for the next five years after 2025, and that is too much. If the Padres can find someone to take on his whole salary, then this makes sense. Financial freedom in the future will only help the team.
Luis Arraez- Odds- 20 percent
Arraez is a pending free agent, and there are some thoughts that the Padres may explore moving him. He seems unlikely to be dealt as he is centralized in the Padres’ lineup and a big factor in the clubhouse. The Padres will explore re-signing Arraez after the season, as he is expected to be a cost-effective player. His odds of being dealt seem minimal, but nothing is ever out of the realm of imagination when it comes to A.J. Preller and the San Diego Padres.
Stephen Kolek- Odds- 15 percent
Kolek’s name was mentioned this past week in rumors, but the Padres seem unlikely to move him unless it’s for a significant upgrade in the starting pitching department. If Kolek was a central figure in a potential deal for Sandy Alcantara, then it makes sense for the Padres. They will not simply throw his name in a trade. He is too vital to the team moving forward as they search for inexpensive starting pitchers for the coming seasons.
Randy Vasquez- Odds- 15 percent
Like Kolek, Vasquez will only be dealt if the Padres upgrade in the starting rotation. The right-hander has been very serviceable for the Friars this season, and they will need pitchers like him to enjoy sustained success in the next few years. Vasquez may be shopped around by the Padres, but there probably isn’t much truth to the rumors you hear out there.
