Padres Down on the Farm: July 31 (Lizarraga pitches well for SA/Ornelas on fire in EP)
San Diego Padres affiliates went 0-5 on Wednesday.
Here is a recap of the dayās events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 7-6 vs Oklahoma City in 10 innings) (41-63 on the season)
Eguy Rosario – 4 for 5, Home Run, Double, Two RBI
Tirso Ornelas – 3 for 4, Game-Tying Home Run
Jhony Brito – 0.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 1 K (28 pitches, 616 strikes)
In a tense back-and-forth affair, the Chihuahuas fought back to erase an early 4-0 deficit before falling in extra innings. Starter Jhony Brito did not have his fastball command, walking two and allowing four runs after an error from third baseman Matthew Batten. Left-hander Omar Cruz deserves some credit for the Chihuahuasā efforts, as he tossed 3.2 innings of one-run baseball in relief of Brito, punching out six batters.
Tirso Ornelas and Nate Mondou combined for three RBI in the third, making it a 4-3 game. After Oklahoma City added two runs off Jackson Wolf in relief, Eguy Rosario hit a two-run homer to bring the game back within one run. The tie would come this time, as Tirso Ornelas hit his 15th home run of the season to knot things up. Ornelas wraps up July, hitting .419/.463/.640 in that time frame. Sean Reynolds tossed a scoreless ninth, and Tom Cosgrove allowed the automatic runner to score in the tenth, and El Paso would strand their automatic runner, dropping the game 7-6.
San Antonio Missions (Lost 11-5 vs Frisco) (45-51 on the season)
Lucas Dunn – 1 for 4, Two-RBI Double
Connor Hollis – 2 for 2, Walk
Victor Lizarraga – 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 7 K (84 pitches, 58 strikes)
A strong start from Victor Lizarraga provided the Missions a strong chance at a win, but a meltdown from the Missionsā bullpen did them no favors. Lizarraga pitched five strong innings, allowing five hits and striking out seven. The right-hander worked out of trouble in the second and fifth innings, keeping the opponent at bay.
A five-run fifth was led by a big two-run double from Lucas Dunn, paired with RBI singles from Michael De La Cruz and Ripken Reyes. Mitch Miller allowed three runs in 0.1 innings in relief, and Ryan Och (who entered the game with a 2.16 ERA in his last five outings) allowed four runs in two innings of work. Francis Pena allowed three earned runs in 1.2 innings, striking out three. It was the first time Pena allowed an earned run since June 16, a span of 15 innings.
Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 6-5 vs West Michigan in 11 innings) (39-59 on the season)
Kai Murphy – 1 for 1 – Two Runs
Ethan Salas – 1 for 4
Jagger Haynes – 6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 5 K (89 pitches, 52 strikes)
It was yet another strong start for left-hander Jagger Haynes. The left-hander struck out five batters in six innings, generating whiffs on 33% of swings against him. Haynes walked four in the outing, but was able to work through base traffic. Devin Ortiz and Nerwilian Cedeno delivered RBI singles to tie the game at two in the eighth inning.
Entering extra innings, the Whitecaps scored two, but the TinCaps tied the game thanks to the bat and wheels of Kai Murphy, who scored the tying run on a wild pitch. An error from Devin Ortiz plated two in the top of the inning, and Ortiz drove in a run to make it a 6-5 game in the bottom of the 11th, but Joshua Mears struck out swinging to end the game.
Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 5-2 vs Fresno) (50-46 on the season)
Ethan Long – 1 for 5, Two-RBI Double
Oswaldo Linares – 2 for 4
Jose Luis Reyes – 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K (76 pitches, 49 strikes)
Jose Luis Reyes took the mound for Lake Elsinore and tossed five innings, striking out four batters. He did allow four runs, struggling with base traffic in the first three innings, in which all four runs crossed the plate. Yerry Landinez allowed one run in two innings of relief, striking out three. The offense struggled against Grizzlies pitching, putting up five hits and two runs. The lone RBI for Lake Elsinore came off the bat of Ethan Long, a two-run double in the seventh. Leodalis De Vries reached base twice and scored a run, and catcher Oswaldo Linares got two hits in the loss.
ACL Padres: No Game
DSL Padres Gold (Lost 7-5 vs DSL NYY Yankees) (19-23 on the season)
Darian Castillo – 3 for 5, Double, Run Scored
Yimy Tovar – 2 for 4, Run Scored
Luis Maracara – 5 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Padres Gold starter Luis Maracara tossed five strong innings, allowing three runs. Maracara fought through nine baserunners to keep the Padres Gold in the game, getting nine outs on balls in play (five groundouts, four flyouts). Moises Valdez tied the game on an RBI walk, and the Padres Gold capitalized on fielding errors from the Yankees to take a 4-2 lead, even pulling off a double steal robbery of home plate.
The bottom of the sixth turned the game on its head, as three walks and a fielding error from the Padres tied the game. The Yankees would take the lead on a smart baserunning play and a fielding error to lead 6-4. The Yankees added an insurance run on a home run off reliever Abraham Agramonte, which would be meaningful as the Padres pulled off another double steal to make it a two-run game. However, the team would be unable to pull off the comeback, with Gustavo Marquez striking out to end the game. Darian Castillo notched three singles out of the leadoff spot, raising his OBP to .479 in 23 games.
