Padres minor league affiliates went 1-3 on Saturday.

Here is our daily recap of games played.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 4-0 vs Albuquerque) (6-8 on the season)
Jase Bowen – 1-for-2, Double, Two Walks

Anthony Vilar – 1-for-3, Double

JP Sears – 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R (2 ER), 1 BB, 5 K (85 pitches – 54 strikes)

El Paso’s lineup was silenced by the Isotopes’ pitching staff, as they were shut out in a 4-0 loss. The lineup only mustered four hits against five Albuquerque pitchers, and though they had three doubles, the Chihuahuas were unable to deliver a hit with runners in scoring position. El Paso went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, stranding seven runners in the loss. Jase Bowen reached base three times in the loss, while both Anthony Vilar and Nick Schnell hit doubles in the loss. On the mound, JP Sears pitched four innings of three-run baseball, striking out five. Sears opened the game with two scoreless frames before the third inning saw him run into trouble the second time through the order. An error and a single put runners on the corners before a wild pitch scored a run for Albuquerque. After the wild pitch, Blaine Crim hit his second career home run off Sears to extend the lead to 3-0. Omar Cruz struck out two in a scoreless inning, and Yuki Matsui allowed a run in one inning of work. Justin Yeager threw two scoreless innings through the seventh and eighth, and Ethan Routzahn worked a scoreless ninth in the loss.

San Antonio Missions (Won 4-3 in 10 innings vs Corpus Christi) (2-6 on the season)

Ethan Salas – 2-for-4, RBI Single

Braedon Karpathios – 1-for-5, Walk-off RBI Single

Ian Koenig – 4.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 4 K (81 pitches – 48 strikes)

San Antonio rode momentum from a ninth-inning game-tying rally to earn their first walk-off win of the season. The lineup registered nine hits in the win, with Ethan Salas’ multi-hit game leading the way. Salas drove in a run with an RBI single and also lined a 102 mph double as part of his day at the plate. Behind the plate, Salas gunned down an opposing baserunner attempting to steal second base. The Missions stole four bases of their own, with Kai Roberts earning two steals. Roberts had two hits and a run scored, while Tirso Ornelas went 1-for-3 with a single. Ornelas set up the tying run, as Romeo Sanabria singled behind him to put the tying run on base. Carson Tucker ran for Sanabria, and while Ornelas scored on a groundout, a wild pitch scored Tucker to tie the game.

Ian Koenig started for the Missions and allowed three runs in 4.2 innings of work. Koenig fanned four batters while walking just two. Koenig picked up six outs on the ground, and while he didn’t rack up the swings and misses, he kept his pitches competitive throughout. Andrew Thurman struck out two in 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, and Harry Gustin threw two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth innings, striking out three over 33 pitches. Manuel Castro pitched a scoreless 10th inning, thanks in part to an outfield assist by Carson Tucker to cut down the go-ahead run at the plate.

The bullpen’s performance set up the Missions to win it, and after Kai Roberts stole third base, Braedon Karpathios lined a single to left field to win the game.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 12-4 vs Lansing) (2-6 on the season)

Jake Cunningham – 2-for-3, Home Run

Kasen Wells – 2-for-4, Single, Two RBI

Jamie Hitt – 4 IP, 4 H, 3 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 3 K (65 pitches – 42 strikes)

Left-hander Jamie Hitt’s High-A debut was plagued by a tough defensive performance by Fort Wayne’s infield. The left-hander threw two strong scoreless innings, but ran into an avalanche in the third. A one-out error by Rosman Verdugo opened the gates for three Lansing runs; the Lugnuts tallied three hits and a walk against Hitt in the third. Nonetheless, Hitt bounced back in the fourth inning to end his outing on a good note. Out of the bullpen, Will Varmette was BABIP’ed by the Lugnuts’ offense, as five of the seven hits he allowed narrowly evaded TinCaps fielders. Varmette was removed after 1.1 innings and five earned runs allowed, but two bequeathed baserunners. Both runners came in to score against Clark Candiotti, continuing a trend of inherited runners scoring after Varmette departed. Candiotti fanned three in 1.2 innings of relief, allowing one run of his own. Vicarte Domingo pitched two innings, allowing one unearned run while fanning one batter.

The TinCaps lineup had some thump for one of the first times this season, as they hit two homers for the first time in the young campaign. Jake Cunningham got the team on the board in the fifth with a solo home run, his first in the Padres organization. Kasen Wells went 2-for-4 with two separate RBI singles, and Dylan Grego drew two walks while also scoring a run. Alex McCoy launched his first High-A home run in the loss, and Kavares Tears finished 1-for-2 with a double and two walks.

I'd like this amount to

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 5-0 vs Rancho Cucamonga) (3-5 on the season)

Ryan Wideman – 2-for-4, Triple

George Bilecki – 1-for-2, Double, Walk

Tyler Schmitt – 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 5 K (60 pitches – 34 strikes)

Despite six hits as a team, Lake Elsinore failed to bring across a run, losing in shutout fashion. The pitching staff performed admirably, as right-hander Tyler Schmitt fanned five in 2.2 innings of one-run baseball. Though the right-hander walked three batters, he found ways to make competitive pitches when needed to gut through an outing without his A+ stuff. Joseph Herrera matched him and then some, throwing 3.1 innings of one-run baseball with five strikeouts. While the 5-foot-8 southpaw doesn’t possess overwhelming velocity, he comes at hitters from a unique angle that has made him hard to hit. Carlos Medina walked no batters in 2.1 innings of relief, but he was tagged for a run in the eighth and two in the ninth. Medina struck out three batters and has shown an ability to be effective while economical in the pitch count department.

The Storm’s lineup had two players with multi-hit performances. Ryan Wideman hit his first triple of the season, finishing 2-for-4. Jorge Quintana continued to barrel up baseballs, finishing 2-for-4 with two singles. Quintana is off to a slow start this season, but if he starts to heat up, this could be the start of something new. George Bilecki reached base twice in the ballgame, hitting his third double of the season in the process. Truitt Madonna picked up a single in four at-bats, and while Conner Westenburg didn’t have a hit, he made an impact on defense with an outfield assist.
