San Diego FC finally won a game after a drought that lasted over two months. SDFC hosted Austin FC for a game in the 2026 MLS regular season this Wednesday, May 13.

The Azul and Chrome side was in desperate need of a win after its worst stretch in franchise history. San Diego had not won a game since March 11 and had not won a game in MLS since March 7.

This winless streak spanned 10 games in all competitions and included six losses. Now, SDFC is undefeated in three consecutive games after this win against Austin.

Mikey Varas did make some changes to his usual starting 11 as he sat both Anibal Godoy and Amahl Pellegrino and started Pedro Soma and Alex Mighten.

Varas went with an all-out offensive approach in the midfield with Soma, David Vazquez, and Onni Valakari. This boldness from Varas paid off in a big way as all three midfielders ended up being crucial in this match.

Austin FC has also been struggling this season, and the away team’s weaknesses were certainly very present in this game.

The home team came away with a fast start as David Vazquez scored in the eighth minute. Onni Valakari provided the assist on the scoring play with a cross from the right flank of the penalty area.

Vazquez slid towards their sphere and was able to put the ball in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. This lead was extended shortly in the 17th minute when Anders Dreyer scored his first open-play goal since March 22. Dreyer scored two penalty goals before this one, but had been unable to score a non-penalty goal in nearly two months.

SDFC ended the first half with a 2-0 lead and was really looking like the much more dominant team. San Diego controlled 69-percent possession in the opening 45 minutes and had 11 shots to Austin’s four.

San Diego kept that forward momentum at the start of the second half and really seemed to be pushing for a third goal. That third goal came in the 54th minute when Pedro Soma struck the ball from the outside of the box and found the net.

The Azul and Chrome sides lowered the intensity after that goal and even conceded a lot of the possession to the visitors. However, Austin was unable to be productive with the ball as SDFC kept pushing.

I'd like this amount to

Marcus Ingvartsen scored San Diego’s fourth goal of the night in the 79th minute. Luca Bombino sent in a perfect cross that found the Danish Striker. Ingvartsen finished the scoring opportunity effortlessly to secure the massive 4-0 win.

SDFC was not finished on the night as David Vazquez scored a second goal in stoppage time to make it 5-0.

There had been flashes of this type of effort in recent performances, but the team had not been clinical enough to pull off a result like this. While Snapdragon Stadium was not filled to the brim, there was still a very euphoric crowd that enjoyed this result from the home team.

San Diego was facing a struggling team, and this type of result is crucial to start trying to turn the season around. After being unable to win for 10 consecutive games, SDFC may be heading into a very positive stretch before the World Cup break.
