Report: Padres to extend manager Mike Shildt

The San Diego Padres gave manager Mike Shildt a two-year extension into 2027.
According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres and Mike Shildt are set to finalize a two-year contract extension. That would keep Shildt under contract in San Diego through the 2027 MLB season.

Shildt was hired as manager following Bob Melvin’s departure to the San Francisco Giants after the 2023 season. Shildt orchestrated a marvelous turnaround after the team experienced a lackluster 2023 campaign under Melvin.
In 2024, the Padres went 93-69. That marked just the fifth time in franchise history a Padres team had won at least 90 games. The 93 victories rank second-best in franchise history after the 98 wins in 1998.
Shildt is just the fourth Padres manager to guide the team to a 90-plus win season.
Shildt deserves a lot of credit for the good that took place in 2024 with San Diego’s baseball team. After an uneven start to the year that had them under .500 as late as June 20, he got his squad turned around. The Padres were one of the best teams in baseball after the All-Star break, boasting a 43-20 record after the break.
The Padres won the Wild Card Series against the Atlanta Braves, advancing to the National League Division Series. Eventually, the Padres fell to the Dodgers three games to two. However, there is still plenty of reason to hope in the 2025 Padres and beyond.
Now, those future squads are set to have Shildt at the helm. Continuity after a solid season is important. After a 2023 season that was turbulent and full of angst about the manager position, this offseason will be crystal clear- Shildt is the man in San Diego.
