The Tijuana Xolos will play their 12th game in the Liga MX 2023 Apertura season this Saturday, October 21, against Queretaro at the Estadio Corregidora.
Club Tijuana is still winless on the road this season with no wins (on the field) in five away games, the lone win being due to a Liga MX ruling against Puebla.
The Xoloitzcuintles have been outstanding at home recently, but the road struggles have kept the border city team from being among the top teams in Liga MX. Club Tijuana is coming off a 2-1 win at the Estadio Caliente against fifth-place Atletico San Luis, in a game where Alejandro Martinez and Carlos Gonzalez scored the goals for Miguel Herrera’s team. The Aztec Canines now have an opportunity to surpass San Luis on the league table by the end of the weekend with a win from this game against Queretaro and a draw or loss for San Luis in their respective game.
Carlos Gonzalez has been Tijuana’s best player. He is currently the Liga MX joint-top goalscorer, tied at eight goals scored with Santos Laguna’s Harold Preciado. Gonzalez has a massive physical presence inside the penalty area and tremendous aerial play that makes him a threat to any Liga MX backline. There have been other standout players for Xolos, like goalkeeper Antonio Rodriguez, midfielder Fernando Madrigal, and defender Nicolas Diaz.
Rodriguez specifically had a stunning performance in Xolos’ 2-1 win over San Luis, making ten total saves in the game. Rodriguez has been the savior for the Prehistoric Dogs for a couple of seasons, but the recent offensive production has resulted in more positive results for the Border City team.
Queretaro has not had an ideal season, currently in 16th place with just 12 points from 12 games played in this 2023 Apertura season. Club Tijuana and Queretaro still share ownership, and there are several former Xolos players on Queretaro, like Federico Lertora, Joaquin Montecios, and Camilo Sanvezzo. Even the Queretaro manager Mauro Gerk was a fan-favorite for the Xoloitzcuintles fans in his playing days.
Queretaro is on a three-game winless streak, coming off a 3-1 loss against Toluca, as this is a better time than ever for Club Tijuana to get that first road win of the season.
