Xolos Femenil 2018 Apertura: Club Tijuana Ladies Struggle Without Top Scorer, Continue Winless Streak
Tijuana, Mexico
The Tijuana Xolos women’s team hosted Cruz Azul at the Estadio Caliente for a matchup in Week 7 of the Liga MX Femenil 2018 Apertura on Monday, Aug. 27.
Cruz Azul has been one of the weakest teams in the league so this was set to be a very simple task for the Club Tijuana ladies.
This was not the case as Xolos Femenil continued their struggles and failed to win for a fourth straight game. Andrea Rodebaugh’s side played to a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Caliente in what was a disappointing performance for Las Rojinegras.
The attendance at the Mictlan was not the best, just like the game itself, that featured a very poor first half. The second half of the clash was a lot better, but the Club Tijuana ladies still struggled to be dangerous on the attack.
A big part of this was the absence of Inglis Hernandez, who was missing the match due to an injury. Hernandez is Club Tijuana’s top scorer with four goals so far and was missed heavily in this game with the speed and finishing ability she does offer.
Cruz Azul was able to close spaces and generate some chances as the Mexico City team scored first in the 57th minute with a strike by Sharon Barba. Â The goal was the product of a ridiculous defensive mistake that stemmed from passing the ball around in the back.
Xolos Femenil did eventually get a goal back in the 72nd minute off a nice shot from outside of the box by Samantha Arellano. The game ended 1-1 as the Club Tijuana ladies were unable to use their home-field advantage and defeat an inconsistent Cruz Azul team.
Andrea Rodebaugh’s team is now starting to look worrying as it is winless in its last four games, and three of those four games have been at home. Xolos Femenil’s next game will be against Puebla away from home on Sept. 9, but their next home game will not be until Sept. 24 against Veracruz.
