Padres Down on the Farm- July 25 (A DSL sweep/TinCaps’ bats come alive)

San Diego Padres affiliates went 5-1 on Saturday

Here is a recap of the day’s events.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 5-1 to Las Vegas) (43-57 on the season) 

Evan Fitterer– 4 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K (86 pitches- 44 strikes)

Dustin Harris– (1-for-4) 3B, Run

Nick Pratto– (2-for-3) 2B

Blake Hunt– (1-for-3)

The El Paso Chihuahuas could not get much going with the bats in a 5-1 loss in Vegas. The team was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and scattered six hits in the loss. The team failed to walk in the contest and that did not help matters.  Nick Pratto went 2-f0r-3 with a double in the loss. Blake Hunt went 1-for-3 and is hitting for a .288 average after starting the season on the I.L. with a core injury. Dustin Harris tripled in the loss.

Evan Fitterer started the game and coughed up three earned runs in four innings of work. The 26-year-old righty owns a 3.99 ERA so far this season which isn’t very bad for the PCL. Johan Moreno threw two scoreless innings in the game. Ty Adcock and Alek Jacob also worked a scoreless appearance for the Chihuahuas. Andrew Moore surrendered two earned runs on four walks in the game. The 26-year-old righty only managed to get two out in the game.

San Antonio Missions (Won 4-3 over Frisco) (43-52 on the season)

Albert Fabian– (2-for-2) 2B, RBI

Ethan Salas– (2-for-3) BB, K

Jake Cunningham– (2-for-4) HR, 2B, Run, 3 RBI, K

Andrew Thurman– 6 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 10 K (85 pitches- 56 strikes)

San Antonio held on for a 4-3 win at home on Saturday night. It was a back-and-forth game, but San Antonio took the lead in the bottom of the 6th inning on an Albert Fabian sac fly. Fabian went 2-for-2 in the game with a double. The first baseman owns a .681 OPS so far this season. Ethan Salas recorded two hits in the win and is hitting .278 on the season with a .778 OPS for the Missions. Jake Cunningham homered and doubled in the win and drove in three of the Missions four runs. The center fielder owns a ,794 OPS in the Texas League.

Andrew Thurman made the start for San Antonio and the right-handed pitcher struck out 10 batters on the night. The 34-year-old journeyman pitcher had it going as he only took 85 pitches to make it through six innings of work. Josh Mallitz earned his fourth save of the season by throwing three scoreless innings for the Padres affiliate. Mallitz has a 4.50 ERA so far this season in 25 games and 40 innings pitched.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 14-4 over Lake County) (40-54 on the season)

Bryan Balzer– 5 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K (63 pitches- 36 strikes)

Luke Cantwell– (2-for-3) HR, 3 Runs, 2 RBI, BB, K

Ryan Wideman– (3-for-4) 2 Runs, SB, RBI, K

Justin DeCriscio– (3-for-5) 2 2B, 3 Runs, RBI, BB, K

A six-run first inning powered the TinCaps to a huge 14-4 win on Saturday. The team put up 12 runs in the first three innings as the offense exploded. Ryan Wideman went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. The outfielder is hitting .302 in the Midwest League and is facing the challenge well since his promotion from the Storm. Justin DeCriscio also recorded three hits as he doubled twice and scored three runs for the TinCaps. Luke Cantwell slugged his fourth homer of the season in the win.

Bryan Balzer continues to pitch well as he went five innings allowing just one hit and striking out two. Balzer owns a 3.54 ERA and looks to be a prospect to keep an eye on. Maikel Miralles coughed up four earned runs in two innings of work. His ERA is at 8.83 on the year in Fort Wayne. Will Koger and Clark Candiotti finished off the game for Fort Wayne and recorded the last six outs of the contest.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 10-2 over Visalia) (49-46 on the season)

Jorge Quintana- (2-for-3) HR, 2B, 3 Runs, 2 RBI, BB

Conner Westenburg– (2-for-3) 2B, 2 Runs, BB, SB, K

Yimy Tovar– (2-for-4) 3 RBI

Tyler Schmitt- 4 IP, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 K (82 pitches- 42 strikes)

The Lake Elsinore Storm scored early and often in a 10-2 win over Visalia. The team stole four more bases on the night and are running wild in the Cal League. Conner Westenburg stole his 40th bag of the season and went 2-for-3 in the game. The 22-year-old outfielder scored three times and owns a .705 OPS this season. Yimy Tovar Third baseman Bradley Frye stole his 23rd base of the season and went 1-for-5 in the game. Jose Verdogo recorded two hits in the game and stole his 26th bag of the season in the game. Jose Quintana homered and doubled in the win.

The pitching staff held a no-hitter into the 6th inning as Tyler Schmitt failed to allow a hit in his four innings of work. The right-handed pitcher did walk five men in the game which shortened his night. Jeferson Vilabona earned the win as he threw three innings of baseball, allowing only one hit in the game. Rordy Maejia allowed a run in two innings of work to close the game for the Storm.

ACL Padres

DSL Padres Gold (Won 8-5 over DSL Red Sox) (29-10 on the season)

Angel Mejia- (1-for-2) SB, Run, RBI, BB, K

Dayquer Alfonzo– (2-for-4) 2 2b, 2 RBI, K

18-year-old left=handed pitcher Yojansky Perez started the game and went three-plus innings for the DSL Padres Gold team. The Dominican native owns a 4.91 ERA so far this season. The southpaw kept the Padres in the game and left with the lead. His bullpen failed him as Joseph Uteza coughed up three runs in relief in two innings of work. Gillermo Romero picked up the win as he recorded the last four outs of the game, only allowing one hit. Romero dropped his ERA to 5.48 on the season.

The DSL Padres Gold team got another great day at the plate from Dayquer Alfonzo. The 18-year-old right-handed-hitting catcher owns a 1.038 OPS in 120 at-bats in the Dominican Republic. He is batting a cool .342 on the season and will be in Arizona soon. He went 2-for-4 at the plate on Saturday and doubled twice. Johanneiker Leon went 1-for-2 with a triple and two walks and is hitting .181 on the season. The DSL team recorded only four hits in the win, but walked nine times as a team.

DSL Padres Brown (Won 8-3 over DSL Cleveland) (8-30 on the season)

Sebastian Maldonado- (2-for-4) 2B, Run, RBI, 2 K

Osmy Osorio– (1-for-4) HR, 3 RBI, Run, 2 K

Gabriel Teran– (1-for-4) 2 Runs, RBI

Rickleby Ramos- 4 IP, 2 H, 4 BB, 5 K

Dioscaride Sarit– 3.2 IP. 3 B, 4 K (Win)

The DSL Padres Brown team scored five runs in the top of the 8th inning to win on Saturday. A three-run homer off the bat of 17-year-old Osmy Osorio capped off the five-run inning for the Padres. Osorio is a left-handed hitting shortstop who owns a .747 OPS so far this year in the D.R.Sebastian Maldonando went 2-for-4 on Saturday and drove in a run. The 18-year-old catcher also scored a run for the team. Gabriel Teran scored twice out of the leadoff spot for the Padres. He owns a 1.000 OPS in 66 at-bats for the Padres team.

Rickleby Romero started the game and struck out five in four innings of work. The 17-year-old lefty who stands 6-foot-3 needed the performance after getting rocked in his first few outings in the DSL. Dioscaride Sarit earned the win as he failed to allow a hit in 3.2 innings of work. The 17-year-old right-handed pitcher also needed a great appearance as he lowered his ERA to 10.73 on the season.
