Padres affiliates went 1-4 with a suspended game on Saturday.

Let’s dive into the day’s events. 

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 11-9 vs Albuquerque in 10 innings) (44-62 on the season)

Romeo Sanabria – 1-for-4, Grand Slam, Four RBI

Dustin Harris – 3-for-6, Home Run, Two RBI

Sean Boyle – 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 4 K (82 pitches – 57 strikes)

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: a high-scoring game in the PCL. El Paso took command of the game early, but a four-run tenth inning saw the Isotopes earn a comeback win. El Paso scored six times in the second inning against Isotopes starter Keegan Thompson. Romeo Sanabria crushed a 107.1 mph grand slam in the second inning, his second home run as a Chihuahua. Sanabria has seen more consistent playing time as of late, and if he can swing the bat as he did on Saturday, the Spring of Sanabria could extend into summer and beyond. Mason McCoy and Nick Solak added on with RBI singles, scoring Dustin Harris and McCoy. Ethan Salas tied the game in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly, scoring Bryce Johnson. Salas went 0-for-3 with a sac fly and a walk in the game, and his ability to see pitches and command the zone continued to be on full display. Dustin Harris picked up three hits, including a tenth-inning two-run home run. Saturday marked Harris’ third straight game with a home run, and the former Athletics draftee has hit .344 with a 1.019 OPS since joining the Chihuahuas. 

Starting pitcher Sean Boyle pitched five innings of five-run baseball in a strong effort. The right-hander, who has usually depended on soft contact for success, picked up 16 swings and misses from Isotopes batters. The 16 whiffs were a season-best for Boyle, and were also the third-most in all of Triple-A baseball. Miguel Cienfuegos pitched two scoreless innings of hitless baseball, striking out three. The left-hander pitched to a 3.55 ERA in July and has thrown two or more innings in three consecutive outings. Ty Adcock threw one inning, allowing two runs. Alek Jacob threw a scoreless ninth, but allowed four runs in the tenth inning. Three of six batted ball events against him in the tenth had exit velocities over 104 mph. Johan Moreno picked up the final out with a strikeout. 

San Antonio Missions (Won 7-5 in 11 innings vs Amarillo) (45-56 on the season)

Ryan Jackson – 4-for-6, Home Run, Three RBI

Braedon Karpathios – 3-for-6, Double, Two RBI

Eric Yost – 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K (75 pitches – 43 strikes)

San Antonio won an extra-inning thriller in 11 innings over Amarillo. Ryan Jackson had his first four-hit game of the season, driving in three runs. Jackson hit his second home run of the season in the fourth inning, later driving in runs on two RBI singles in the fifth and eleventh innings separately. Braedon Karpathios drove in two runs in the contest, opening the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning. Karpathios later delivered a go-ahead RBI single to left field in the seventh inning. Luis Verdugo hit an RBI single in the tenth inning, scoring Ryan Jackson. Kai Roberts, who entered the game as a pinch-runner, hit the game-deciding hit in the eleventh, grounding an RBI single to center field. Jake Cunningham and Tirso Ornelas each drew three walks in the game. 

Eric Yost threw five innings of three-run baseball on Saturday, striking out two batters. The right-hander generated seven ground ball outs from Amarillo’s bats. Yost only generated five whiffs, but was able to produce some rather uncomfortable swings from Sod Poodles batters. Jose Leclerc threw two innings, striking out two batters. After taking a loss earlier in the week, Leclerc bounced back with a scoreless appearance. Leclerc is likely to return to El Paso post-deadline, where he may be an option for the Padres down the stretch. Josh Mallitz allowed one run in the ninth inning on a walk and a double, but struck out one batter in two innings of relief. Francis Pena allowed the automatic runner to score in the tenth, but earned the win. Sadrac Franco made his second appearance of the series, recording the save with a two-strikeout eleventh inning. 

Fort Wayne TinCaps – Suspended Due to Rain, TinCaps led 7-0 in the 2nd inning

The TinCaps’ Saturday game was suspended due to rain in the second inning. Alex McCoy blasted two home runs for the TinCaps in the game, driving in three runs. Zach Evans hit a two-run double in the first inning. Bryan Balzer threw a scoreless first inning on 16 pitches, generating a ground ball double play and a strikeout in the inning. The game will be resumed on Sunday, August 2. 

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 10-1 vs Stockton) (53-48 on the season)

Yimy Tovar – 1-for-3, RBI Single

Yoiber Ocopio – 1-for-3, Single, Stolen Base, Run Scored

Tyler Schmitt – 3.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 4 K (70 pitches – 44 strikes)

Lake Elsinore’s offense was unable to maintain their recent hot stretch, scoring just once in a loss to Stockton. Yimy Tovar had their lone RBI of the night, driving in Yoiber Ocopio on an RBI single. Ocopio was one of four Storm batters to record a hit in the game, swiping the team’s only stolen base. Truitt Madonna drew two walks, as did Jorge Quintana. Dylan Grego singled and walked in the contest, but stranded three runners. Defensively, the aforementioned Truitt Madonna threw out two of three attempted stolen bases. Madonna struggled with navigating the run game, but one wouldn’t have known such with how he did on Saturday. 

Right-hander Tyler Schmitt allowed seven earned runs without escaping the fourth inning. Schmitt struck out four batters, walking two. The right-hander was charged with two home runs allowed and departed the game with the bases loaded. Brandon Langley entered in relief, allowing all three inherited runners to score. Langley allowed four hits and two walks over 2.1 innings, striking out five. Sean Barnett allowed one run in 1.1 innings, striking out two without issuing a walk. Daichi Moriki allowed two runs in one inning and has issued 13 walks in his last 8.1 innings. 

ACL Padres – No Game

DSL Padres Gold (Lost 6-2 in 8 innings vs DSL Brewers Gold) (31-13 on the season)

Joniel Hernandez – 1-for-3, Double, Two Runs Scored

Sebastian Nadales – 2-for-3, Two Singles, RBI

Wilfred Paca – 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 3 K 

In a bullpen game, the Padres Gold lost on a walk-off grand slam in extra innings. Wilfred Paca started for the Padres Gold, allowing one run on four walks and two hits. Paca threw 1.2 innings as the de facto opener. Jederson Paez threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three. The Venezuelan right-hander has not allowed an earned run in his first three career outings. Joseph Uzeta allowed one run in the sixth inning, tying the game at two. 22-year old Jackson Vasquez pitched a scoreless seventh and got one out in the eighth, departing with two runners on. Jose Perez entered and plunked the first batter he faced to load the bases. Perez then allowed a grand slam to Josue Rodriguez to give the Padres Gold their 13th loss of the season. Joniel Hernandez hit a double and scored two runs for the Padres, reaching base twice in the loss. Sebastian Nadales had two singles in the game, with his fourth-inning single scoring Hernandez. Yorvin Morla drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to score the team’s final run. The Padres Gold went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the loss. 

DSL Padres Brown (Lost 15-2 vs DSL Braves) (9-33 on the season)

Ronnier Heras – 1-for-3, Single, Run Scored

Jeanfranco Fernandez – 1-for-3, Double, Run Scored

Rickelby Ramos – 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K 

Rickelby Ramos allowed two runs as the Padres Brown’s bullpen coughed up 13 runs in a battle of sixth-place teams. Ramos, the Padres Brown’s starter, allowed three hits while striking out three. It was the 17-year old southpaw’s second straight strong start, as he was coming off four shutout innings in his last game. Aneury Sosa allowed four runs in 1.1 innings, and Yoel Duarte pitched one-third of an inning, allowing five runs (three earned). Dioscaride Sarit allowed three runs, while Edward Bonifacio was the only Padres Brown pitcher to pitch a scoreless outing (he got two outs). Ronnier Heras hit a single out of three at-bats, scoring a run on a wild pitch. Jeanfranco Fernandez doubled in the sixth inning, scoring on yet another wild pitch. The Padres Brown were held to three hits all game.
