There are conflicting reports that the San Diego Chargers are fielding offers on their all-pro safety Eric Weddle. The 30-year-old is in the final year of a five-year/$40 million dollar deal. Weddle is making $7.5 million this season.

The report indicates the Chargers would have to be “blown away” in order to move Weddle. The Bolts will receive a compensatory pick (2nd round) if he is moved so any offer for Weddle would have to be for multiple picks.

Would the Chargers really deal their captain on defense? They appear to be letting him leave via free agency so if they get a good enough offer, he could very well be dealt by the Chargers. It will be sad to see him leave but the sport is a business and sometimes you have to make decisions without using your heart.

Weddle has missed the last two games with a groin injury. He played in six games this year totaling 43 tackles, 1/2 sack and two pass defends. He grades out as the 31st safety out of 85 according to Pro Football Focus. Not the best wage to gauge a players true value, but this ranking does have great merit.

Reports indicate the New York Giants are heavily interested as are the Pittsburgh Steelers and Jacksonville Jaguars. Weddle will have no trouble finding a home once he hits free agency. Chargers fans hope that he ends up far away from San Diego because the Chargers have a nasty history of letting defensive players go who blossom elsewhere. Rodney Harrison and Junior Seau come to mind of the top of the head.

Weddle had a great opportunity to be a life time Charger and who knows that still might happen. The stadium and relocation issue has made the Chargers a cold organization and they have remained stoic in their stance with Weddle. He clearly would like to stay here, but the team keeps sending signals that they no longer covet his services. The writing just could be on the wall.

Weddle’s play this season had been suffering before his injury. He has had a couple of huge uncharacteristic missed tackles that have left some fans wondering is he is washed up. Ultimately in order to even acquire him a team would have to over pay. It would take multiple picks and one of them must be a second round pick. I don’t know if anyone would be willing to pay that price. Stay tuned the NFL trade deadline is Tuesday at 4:00 PM EST.
