Tijuana Zonkeys Announce Roster Ahead of 2018 CIBACOPA Season
Tijuana’s basketball team, the Zonkeys will start up their new season this Thursday, April 5 at the Auditorio Municipal de Tijuana.
Los Burro-Zebras will start up a three-game series in the border city against Aguilas Doradas de Durango in what should be a thrilling start to the 2018 CIBACOPA season.
The Striped Donkeys announced their official roster for the new season now under the leadership of James Penny. Penny played college ball at Texas Christian University and had an illustrious career in Mexico, where he played four seasons with the Zonkeys.
The Tulsa, Oklahoma native was part of the Zonkeys teams that won back-to-back CIBACOPA titles from 2014-2015 and served as David Abramowitz’s assistant coach last year. Penny’s assistant coach this season will be Anthony Lever, who played in the NBA Summer League with the Sacramento Kings and also has playing experience in the CIBACOPA with Ostioneros de Guaymas.
The border city team did release its roster for the upcoming season that should be one that has potential to possibly fight for the title. The foreigners on the team will be Trayvon Lathan, Mychal Ammons, Kregg Jones, and Quinton Doggett. Trayvon Lathan obviously brings a wealth of experience as he has been with the Zonkeys since 2015. Ammons also has experience in the CIBACOPA while Jones and Doggett are newcomers to the league.
The Mexican players on Los Burro-Zebras will be Fabian Jaimes, Daniel Guzman, and Adrian Romero. Diego Ibarra, Luis Ramirez, and Julio Cesar Martin Del Campo will be the local talent that is required for every CIBACOPA team. Luis Ramirez and Del Campo are both threats from long-range and should be some key players to watch this season. “Chupa” Ramirez is the most experienced player on the border city side as he has been playing professionally for 13 years and is the team captain.
Every CIBACOPA team is also required to carry two players under 21 years old and the players that will take those spots this season for the Zonkeys are Omar Miramontes and Abraham Bueno.
Finally, the Mexican-American player that each CIBACOPA team is allowed to have will be San Diego native Karim Rodriguez for James Penny’s team. Rodriguez has three seasons with Tijuana under his belt and proved to be a solid player for the border city side last year.
Francisco, 26, Chula Vista/Tijuana. I have been a Padres fan all my life, did most of the series previews and recaps in the Padres’ 2016 season for EVT. Now I focus more on the local soccer scene. Tijuana Xolos, San Diego Loyal, San Diego Wave.
