Tijuana Xolos: Club Tijuana Qualifies For Knockout Stage Of 2018 Apertura Copa MX
On Wednesday, Aug. 29, FC Juarez and Toluca played to a 2-2 draw in Week 5 of the 2018 Apertura edition of the Copa MX.
This concluded Juarez’s participation the Copa MX and the result officially lost any hope of Toluca qualifying to the playoffs.
This result also guaranteed the Xolos’ leadership of Group 2 and secured a ticket to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Diego Cocca’s team still has one game left against Toluca away from home in group stage play on Sept. 9 and will go for the win to get better seeding in the playoffs.
The Xolos have seven points and are currently the sixth seed out of 16 teams that will make the knockout stage. Many top teams like Chivas, Club America, and Monterrey have already finished their games in the group stage with 10 points.
Club America is the top seed with 10 points and a goal differential of eight, while second-place Monterrey has a goal differential of five. Club Tijuana has a goal differential of four and would finish as the third seed with any win against Toluca.
The Xolos could also finish in second place with a win of two goals or more, and even in first with an unlikely win of five goals or more.
Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente have struggled in Toluca as they lost 3-0 against Los Chorizeros this season in Week 5 of the Liga MX. But the border city side has looked much better in the Copa MX than in league play and Toluca has looked dreadful in the Copa MX.
