The Tijuana Xolos will close out the Liga MX 2024 Clausura season this Saturday, April 27, against Tigres UANL at the Estadio Universitario.
It has been a highly disappointing campaign, and Club Tijuana will need to pay a substantial fee of upwards of 5 million dollars to finish last on the relegation table.
Club Tijuana has had to pay some sort of fee for three consecutive seasons now for bad results, which is tallying for the club, who have failed to make impressive signings over this period of time. The Aztec Canines found some light at the end of the tunnel with two consecutive victories now, coming from a 3-1 victory against Puebla, who is arguably the worst team this season. However, just as the phrase goes, what lies at the end of the tunnel is not something pleasant for Club Tijuana.
This season was a complete failure for Miguel Herrera, the squad, and Tijuana’s front office, who all failed to put up a competitive performance in the 2024 Clausura. “Piojo” Herrera has said he will leave until he is asked to by Jorgealberto Hank; some rumors have emerged of Herrera departing before the start of next season, but it is all speculative at this point. It is very clear that this squad was not good enough to compete, and several changes need to be made for next season.
Tigres UANL is yet again one of the title favorites in Liga MX and will be highly motivated to win this game with a direct spot to the quarterfinals on the line. Tigres is in fifth place with 28 points and has the potential to slot into a top-four position with a win from this game against the Xoloitzcuintles.
Andre-Pierre Gignac is the solidified superstar on Tigres, but Marcelo Flores has recently received the spotlight with a hat-trick and an assist against Necaxa in his last game. The team from Nuevo Leon has a complete roster with a plethora of talent,t and the Estadio Universitarioisn known to be a fortress in Liga MX.
Club Tijuana faces a seemingly impossible task away from home to close out a grim season,n and the best thing for the border city team is for the season to be over with and turn the page.
