To complete the roster for the 2025 season, the San Diego Padres need to add role players.

The San Diego Padres are built to win now.

There has NEVER been a better time to be a fan of the Padres. Never.

Some forget this fact. But those who have rooted for this franchise for decades know better.

With a roster consisting of Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Dylan Cease, Luis Arraez, Jake Cronenworth, Michael King, Yu Darvish, Robert Suarez, and Jackson Merrill, the team is made for the playoffs. Nothing less than a World Series title will be deemed acceptable.

It is no secret that the San Diego Padres are battling through some financial restraints.

They have secured a talented roster, and most are signed long-term, but they simply cannot continue to buy players. This is not the worst news in the world, as a baseball roster must consist of multiple players knowing their value. Time and time again, we have witnessed teams full of all-star players failing when it comes down to it. The most successful teams have a diverse roster full of “role players” effectively doing their jobs.

For the Padres, players like Cease, Arraez, and King are not secured long-term. Each will be a free agent after the 2025 season. To retain all three men seems very unlikely at this point. Something will need to be done regarding this situation. We will see what the Padres do this winter.

There are relevant players on the roster already, and the best thing for the Padres to do in order to secure more wins is simply add role players or complementary players to what they already have rostered. Bring in players who solved some perceived efficiencies on the roster, whether on the field, in the pitching department, or in the batter’s box.

I'd like this amount to

Now, with some financial issues, this will not be easy for the Padres.

San Diego simply cannot throw money at the situation as they did in the past to add players, at least not at this point. Midway through the season, the ownership group may choose to bite the bullet and spend, but it will be dependent on how close the team is to the promised land.

Chemistry is very important in the game of baseball simply because of the duration of the season. From mid-February to October, these men spend every day with one another. They travel thousands of miles per season and are always together. In doing that, you prefer a group of men who generally like each other.

The next few weeks as the Padres prepare for baseball in Peoria, the Padres must add players who are hungry. Men, who want to compete and will push the veterans on the roster to give it all they got. Motivation is huge in the game of baseball. So is finding the right pieces to the puzzle.

A.J. Preller and his staff learned over the years to perfect this craft. Expect some unusual moves that could pay huge dividends in the end.

  1. James, I want to say I appreciate the work you and your team do on this site. It really helps keep me informed on some of deals and news that a lot of other “bigger” padres sites dont. However, i also want to add that this article in particular is such a fluff piece. Of course we need bench pieces. Instead of blankly stating that, maybe add some names of possible
options you could see as being potential roster fits for our present team, money wise and even personality wise. Look through players available in international FA, or unheralded or bargain bin names on the market that maybe casual fans may not know of now. Dig into things like baseball savant to maybe find an undervalued name or two that fans may not have heard about. That extra time and research could have really added some more substance to the article.

  2. This is the time of hypotheticals and the article was a bit deflating, how quickly news is flooding in about potential roster outcomes and changes that may or may not happen is making me dizzy. Lets be Frank here and realize the organization lost that shine when Java Joe’s elbow got tight in the middle of a playoff game…

As much as love DC Preller would be a full not to take the offering from Baltimore if not ask for more. DC is an upgrade to CB no reason not to feast on a farm system flush full of hitters and a FA 2025 of DC to do it.

  3. The East Village Times is just a wing of the Padres marketing department. This team will be luck to win 82 game with this roster if all that’s being added is ‘role players’.
