San Diego Loyal to play Borussia Dortmund at Snapdragon Stadium
This Wednesday, June 7, a friendly match set for Thursday, July 27, between San Diego Loyal and Bundesliga’s Borussia Dortmund, was officially announced. The game will take place at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, and tickets are set to go on sale this Friday, June 9. Borussia Dortmund ambassador Felipe Santana and SD Loyal’s Landon Donovan made the official announcement at Snapdragon Stadium.
Since the announcement of an MLS team in San Diego, there have been many questions about the San Diego Loyal and the team’s future. The club has previously said that it is here to stay in San Diego, and events like this one greatly help the Loyal stay relevant in the San Diego soccer circle.
With the dedicated fan base the Loyal has, and the global popularity of a team like Borussia Dortmund, a sellout is expected at Snapdragon Stadium. In 2023 there have been more and more high-profile soccer events at Snapdragon Stadium, like the Mexico vs. Cameroon game set for this Saturday, June 10, and this friendly will add another to the list.
TEG Global is in charge of the event, and Content Director Bart Campbell expressed his excitement over the event. “Football’s growth in the city over the last few years has been strong, and we’re delighted to help fuel that excitement and momentum with another European heavyweight in, Borussia Dortmund, coming to town and, in doing so, becoming the first European team to play against the San Diego Loyal SC”, Campbell said.

Borussia Dortmund is currently the second most-relevant team in Germany behind Bayern Munich and is arguably historically also the second-best team in Germany. Dortmund has won eight German league titles in its history and one UEFA Champions League trophy in the 1996-1997 season.
The German team is also known for signing young players and propelling their careers, as they have done with players like Robert Lewandowski, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ilkay Gundogan, Marco Reus, and Mats Hummels.
This past season, the Black and Yellows had a fantastic but also very disappointing campaign, finishing second in the Bundesliga, tied in points with Bayern Munich, but losing the league title on goal differential. Dortmund had to win their last game of the regular season to be crowned Bundesliga champions, but tied 2-2 against Mainz.
The next Bundesliga campaign commences on August 18, as this game will serve as a preparation game for the German team. Borussia Dortmund has a very high-profile squad featuring players like Mats Hummels, Raphael Guerreiro, Marco Reus, and Giovanni Reyna.
Jude Bellingham is set to join Real Madrid, as Borussia Dortmund should have some big signings coming in with the influx of money coming in from that deal. It will be very interesting to see what squad Borussia Dortmund has for that friendly match and how much support the German squad will have for that game.
