This Thursday, December 18, San Diego FC announced the signing of Kieran Sargeant from the Houston Dynamo.

SDFC acquired the Right of First Refusal for Sargeant from Houston in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft and up to $50,000 in Conditional General Allocation Money in 2027.

The Dynamo would also retain a future sell-on percentage if Sargeant is traded or transferred. San Diego not only gained the Right of First Refusal but also managed to reach a contract agreement with the 22-year-old defender.

Sargeant has signed a contract guaranteed through 2026 with club options for 2027 and the 2027-2028 season.

The League City, Texas native came up through the Houston Dynamo academy and has spent his entire career there, barring a loan stint with USL side Lexington SC this year.

Sargeant was a consistent starter for the Kentucky club, recording five assists in 27 USL games played. In 2o24, the young fullback played with Houston Dynamo 2 in MLS Next Pro, recording a goal and an assist in 25 games.

Sargeant is yet to make his MLS debut, but certainly has a favorable chance in San Diego with the opportunities the club gives to younger players.

The 22-year-old plays primarily in the left-back slot, but also can play as a centre-back. Sargeant has a solid physical presence, standing at 6-foot, and adds some depth to the bench.

SDFC allowed Franco Negri to walk this offseason and now has another option in the left-back role behind Luca Bombino. SDFC will continue to stay busy in this transfer window to shape up the squad for the 2026 MLS season.
