On Thursday morning, the club announced a contract extension for 19-year-old standout Luca Bombino, securing him through the 2028–29 season with a club option for an additional year.

Bombino was one of the most exciting players to watch during the past season, quickly establishing himself as a key figure in San Diego FC’s evolving lineup.

What initially appeared to be a settled back line—featuring Franco Negri and Jasper Löeffelsend in the season opener against the LA Galaxy—soon transformed as the campaign progressed. Few could have anticipated how dramatically the defensive unit would change, not only in personnel but also in its shift toward youth and emerging talent.

Young prospects such as Manu Duah and Oscar Verhoeven showcased impressive ability from the outset, signaling the club’s commitment to developing its next generation. Bombino was no exception. He earned a consistent place in the starting lineup and delivered reliable performances week after week, solidifying his role despite his age.

The contract extension represents more than a reward for consistency and talent. It is also a strategic move by San Diego FC to secure a player who has already attracted interest from abroad, including clubs such as West Bromwich Albion. By extending Bombino’s deal, the club not only commits to his development but also protects his long-term value.

San Diego FC now has the opportunity to provide Bombino with a platform to continue growing while maintaining the potential for a significant future transfer.

Bombino initially arrived in San Diego on loan from LAFC, with a permanent transfer option included in the deal in exchange for a 2025 international roster slot. The club exercised that option, acquiring him permanently for $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM)—a move that already appears to be excellent value given his performances.

In addition to making 32 appearances for San Diego FC, Bombino earned a call-up to the U.S. Youth Men’s National Team and featured at the U-20 World Cup, starting in the match against South Africa.

At just 19 years old, this extension marks only the beginning of what promises to be a bright and impactful career for Luca Bombino.
