This Monday, January 6, San Diego FC officially announced the acquisition of veteran winger Emmanuel Boateng.
The Ghanaian player was acquired from New England Revolution in exchange for $200,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money.
Boateng is 30 years old but has strong ties to this SDFC project as he is a graduate of the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana. SDFC owner Mohamed Mansour owns this academy, and along with the club, a new academy is also just starting up in San Diego.
Boateng attended UC Santa Barbara before starting his professional career in 2013 with Ventura County Fusion. The African winger then went on to play three years with Swedish team Helsingborgs before a long and successful stint at LA Galaxy. Since 2016, Boateng has been playing in Major League Soccer and has played for the Galaxy, D.C. United, Columbus Crew, and most recently, New England Revolution.
Boateng’s most consistent stint came with LA Galaxy, and this past season, he was mostly used as a rotational player for New England. The 30-year-old winger played in 23 games for the East Coast club but only started eight games and scored two goals along with two assists.
SDFC Sporting Director Tyler Heaps talked about Boateng and what he can provide for this project. “Ema is a seasoned veteran in Major League Soccer who has been a part of very successful teams. He provides flexibility across the front four and can impact the game in a number of different ways”, said Heaps.
Boateng is unlikely to be a starter with the current outlook of the team and still some expected signings to come. However, his veteran presence and speed off the bench has the potential to be valuable to this young team.
SDFC is just a few weeks from starting the preseason, and more signings need to come in the upcoming days to complete this roster.
