San Diego FC set to play inaugural match against LA Galaxy
This Monday, October 21, San Diego FC officially announced that its inaugural match in franchise history will be against LA Galaxy. The game will be played at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif., and is set to be held on February 22, 2025, or February 23, 2025.
San Diego FC has a head coach in Mikey Varas, but most of the inaugural-season roster is still unknown in anticipation of the Expansion Draft.
The big name on the roster is still Hirving “Chucky” Lozano, who has been playing with PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Eredivisie. The Mexican international has four goals and an assist in four games but has been injured and has not played since September 1. Lozano is set to be ready for the 2025 MLS campaign and is set to receive more minutes with PSV before the year ends.

The LA Galaxy are one of the most iconic teams in MLS history, having made the splash signing of David Beckham back in 2007. That signing changed the course of soccer in the United States forever and really put the Galaxy on the map.
However, the Los Angeles team has not won a title since 2014 and will be looking to compete in the playoffs this year. The Galaxy will face Colorado Rapids in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs in a match where they are the favorites.
It was also announced that the first SDFC game at Snapdragon Stadium will be against St. Louis SC on Saturday, March 1. The Midwestern side is one of the newest teams in MLS, barely joining the league last year.
St. Louis was spectacular in their opening season, finishing top of the Western Conference, but had a falloff in 2024. St. Louis finished 12th on the Western Conference table and 24th on the overall MLS table.
San Diego FC has a long way to go until the start of the 2024 MLS season, still without 11 players to field a side. This will change in the coming months with the Expansion Draft and the potential for more splash signings ahead of January 2025.
