Padres Winter League Report: January 12 (Van Steensel with 9th Save)
A total of six men were in action on Saturday around the globe.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
Australian Baseball League
Todd Van Steensel–Â 1 IP, 1 H, K
The right-handed closer has his ERA at 2.20 now for the year after recording his ninth save of the year in the ABL. He has now struck out 21 batters in 16 innings pitched this season. Van Steensel has walked only seven so far and has shown decent control on the mound.
Michael Gettys– (2-6) K, CS
Gettys has 38 strikeouts in 126 at-bats but has put up a .302 average and a .979 OPS with seven homers. He has played solid defense and stole four bases for the Bite. Gettys has all the tools to be a very special player. He just needs to make more contact.
Mexican winter league
Esteban Quiroz– (1-3) 2B, K
Batting fifth and playing second base, Esteban Quiroz doubled in three at-bats. It will be interesting to see if he is able to make his mark in the spring and possibly compete for a bench spot on the team.
Dominican winter league
Fernando Tatis Jr.– (1-4) SB, K
Batting second, Tatis went 1-for-4 on Saturday. He was playing shortstop for the Estrellas and has really played well this winter. Tatis will play for the Padres at some point in 2019. Once he arrives, he should be a great presence in the lineup for a long time for a Padres franchise that has starved for relevant position players. It is getting exciting in San Diego.
Puerto Rican winter league
Aldemar Burgos– (1-3) BB
The right-handed hitting outfielder went 1-for-3 on the day in Puerto Roci. He was playing right field for Gigantes de Carolina and batting eighth.
Venezuelan winter league
Luis Torrens– (1-3) BB, Run, K
Catching and batting eighth for Navegantes del Magallanes, Luis Torrens went 1-for-3 on Saturday. He has had a solid year in Venezuela and could be a sleeper for some playing time in 2019 behind the dish.
