Progressive Field – Cleveland

The rubber match between the San Diego Padres and the Cleveland Guardians began with a weather delay. The game that was supposed to take place at 10:40 PST began at 1:50 PST.

The Guardians ended up being the team to break up the Padres’ win streak. A little ironic considering the previous foes the Padres went up against last week. Against old friend Joey Cantillo, the Padres just couldn’t get any offense going outside of the first inning. The Padres’ pitching chaos strategy, while largely gone, was still in effect in Saturday’s game and failed them.

The Guardians, known for their starting rotation, brought out Tanner Bibee, a solid arm with good control. Not unlike Gavin Williams, his biggest weakness is home runs. More on that later.

For the Padres is Casey Mize in his third start with his new team. His second start was a no-decision that gave the Padres enough room to take the game. He’s still looking for his first win in a brown and gold uniform.

The Padres struck first against the Guards. Luis Rengifo, with a solo shot to right-center field, put the Padres on the board and got the ball rolling.

Gavin Sheets decided to join him at the plate, landing another home run to put the Padres on top 2-0. These homers both came with two outs.

Rengifo continues to be a blessing for the Padres’ offense, consistently landing game-defining plays for the team. His homer today makes his total count four in 2026. All of which have come during his time with the Padres.

The Padres got started again in the fourth inning. Jackson Merrill got on third base after a walk, a fielder’s choice, and a wild pitch. After this series of unfortunate events for the Guardians, a single from Xander Bogaerts finally sent him home.

Much like the homers that came before, the Padres scored with two outs. It’s certainly one of the most interesting developments for the Friars this year. In a playoff atmosphere, especially, a clutch factor like this is invaluable. Keep an eye out for moments like this in the future; it may prove to be a defining feature of the 2026 Padres.

On the pitching side of things, Mize was having an astounding night. In his best start so far with the Padres, he tossed six scoreless frames, striking out three men. For his efforts, Mize earned himself his first win as a Padre.

Tanner Bibee, on the other hand, continued to struggle. After loading the bases with the Padres, he was nearly taken out. However, a double play from Freddy Fermin ended things prematurely. In any case, that nice play would be the end of his night.

From the fourth inning onward, the Padres had a relatively quiet night. However, something special happened in the eighth inning that got the club going again.

Jase Bowen hit his second career homer. Bowen, a native of Ohio, got to land major league homer in his home state. For the rookie, it’s a very cool and memorable moment.

With one final homer to ring in the ball game in the ninth, thanks to Jake Cronenworth. That makes four homers on the night.

Since this was not a save situation, Yuki Matsui came in the ninth to finish out the game.

For the Padres, it was a very difficult rubber match they made look easy.

The Padres continue their away series with a three-game series against the New York Mets. Taking the mound for the Padres is Walker Buehler (7-5, 4.88 ERA). For the Mets, Nolan McLean (8-8, 3.42 ERA).
