The San Diego Padres continue their homestand in game two against the New York Yankees at Petco Park.

The Padres took game one against the Yanks in rather dramatic fashion. Luis Campusano hit his second walk-off home run of 2026 to finish out the game. The offense was relatively quiet but displayed a strong clutch factor.

For Sunday evening’s game, Robbie Ray is on the mound for the Padres. He’s still searching for his 100th career win as a starting pitcher. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find it today.

The Yankees struck hard after a clean first inning from Ray.

Ray loaded the bases off a base hit and two walks. Walks have been a killer for Ray lately. For the past two year’s hes lead tbhe league in walks. In 2026, they’re honestly a primary reason why he hasn’t been efficient for the Padres. A third walk in a row added another run to the Yankees’ count.

Craig Stammen very nearly pulled Ray, but decided not to. Ray immediately allowed a hit from Cody Bellinger that allowed two Yankees to score.

Ray continued to struggle throughout the third inning, allowing another walk and two hits that sent a runner scoring. That is ultimately what sent Ray packing in the third inning.

So far, Robbie Ray, much like this fellow trade acquisition, isn’t quite the player the Padres were hoping for. However, bases on balls certainly weren’t an unobserved issue the Padres couldn’t have noticed beforehand.

In any case, the bullpen worked overtime today, keeping the game within striking distance. Unfortunately, the Padres’ offense was cold tonight.

The Padres are somewhat used to overcoming large deficits. However, outside of the first inning, they didn’t look very strong against Carlos Rodon.

The Padres’ only run on the night came somewhat early. Manny Machado attempted to change the tide in the fourth inning with a home run to deep left field.

This brought the game to its final score of 5-1.

The Padres play the rubber match against the Yankees Sunday morning at Petco Park.

Probable pitchers for the Padres and Yankees are Michael King (9-9, 3.11) and Gerrit Cole (8-7, 3.29 ERA), respectively.
