Padres EVT Podcast: Episode 96 with Eric Longenhagen
The FanGraphs Padres list dropped this week, so we brought in Eric Longenhagen to give us some insight. The list wasn’t a complete re-ranking of the team, so the numbers and the rankings are sightly off, if you ask our opinion.
Eric is a friend to the podcast and having him on is always a joy.
We discuss the list, of course, but I first wanted Eric to give the fans some thoughts about the state of the Padres and how well this team is being put together for the future. He beautifully states his opinion on the present young players and also goes into detail about the men within the organization who are responsible for cultivating the talent.
Patrick asks Eric to explain the FanGraphs ranking process, which is pretty fascinating to hear.
We get into prospects and start with some of the bottom-tiered names on their list. Eric gives us insight on Reggie Lawson and Jorge Ona to start off. Lawson should be higher on the rankings, and Eric admits that, while Ona has been a disappointment so far.
Buddy Reed is off to a hot start and we get Eric’s impression on the athletic outfielder.
The next group of players we discuss includes Luis Patino, Mason Thompson, Jeisson Rosario, and Tirso Ornelas. The Padres’ system is full of talent and Eric is well-educated on almost every prospect on the farm.
We all discuss Josh Naylor, who has been a joy this season. Eric admits he wasn’t a fan of Naylor, but does say that the changes he has made in his approach are excellent. Naylor should continue to excel as long as he is more patient at the plate.
Chris Paddack gets some well-deserved love in the show as we talk about the right, handed pitcher.
This was an excellent show and Eric’s fourth time on. He is always a joy to talk to and we thank him for his time.
Thank you for the listen.
