Padres Down on the Farm: May 3 (Sod Poodles Win on Potts Walk-Off Home Run)

While the Chihuahuas saw their impressive win streak snapped with a loss to the Salt Lake Bees, the Sod Poodles got a walk-off home run off the bat of Hudson Potts to pick up a victory.

The minor league affiliates for the San Diego Padres went 1-3 on Friday.

Here is a recap of the day’s action

El Paso Chihuahuas Lost 7-5 (19-8 on the season)

The long win streak is over for the Chihuahuas as a four-run fifth inning from Salt Lake slingshot the Bees into the lead and carried them to victory.

Austin Allen staked the Chihuahuas to an early lead with a two-run homer in the first inning while Jason Vosler padded the lead with an RBI single in the second. Fernando Rodriguez Jr. bequeathed the lead in the next half-inning by giving up a three-run blast to Jared Walsh. El Paso retook the lead an inning later on Esteban Quiroz‘ fourth home run of the year, a two-run shot that gave the Chihuahuas a 5-3 lead.

It was the last lead they would take all game. The Bees stung relievers Paco Rodriguez and Phil Maton for four runs by hitting nothing but singles. All of the runs were charged to Rodriguez and El Paso wouldn’t put up a fight for the rest of the game despite shutout relief innings from Carlos Torres and Robert Stock after Maton left the game.

Amarillo Sod Poodles Win 6-5 (12-16 on the season)

It took 11 innings, but the Sod Poodles pulled out a win after going down by a run in the bottom of the eleventh. With two outs and staring a loss directly in the face, Hudson Potts blasted a pitch right down the middle to right field for a walk-off, two-run home run.

While the Cardinals took the lead in the first inning, the Poodles roared back with a three-run third inning that was capitalized with Potts expanding the lead with an RBI single. The Cardinals came right back at T.J. Weir in the next inning with two runs to tie the game. Weir would allow three runs in the six innings he pitched but was very efficient with his pitches as he walked none and struck out nine.

Amarillo picked up another run in the sixth inning on relief pitcher Andres Munoz‘ RBI single, but it would be the last run they would score until the eleventh inning.

Springfield tied the game in the top of the ninth inning off of Travis Radke and took the lead in the top of the eleventh on a run-scoring fielder’s choice. Owen Miller and Jorge Ona both struck out before Potts cracked the walk-off dinger.

Lake Elsinore Storm Lost 10-5 (12-17 on the season)

The JetHawks swooped on Aaron Leasher early in the game and the Storm couldn’t rebound in time and failed to overcome an early eight-run deficit.

Five runs off of Leasher in the first inning came off of a walk, two singles, a double and a two-run home run quickly set the Storm back, but an extra three runs in the second put the game out of reach early. Leasher left the game after 4.2 innings, surrendering eight runs on ten hits while walking three and striking out five.

The Storm didn’t get on the board until Luis Campusano‘s solo home run in the sixth inning and made a push to overcome the deficit. A three-run seventh inning inched the Storm closer while Robbie Podorsky‘s eighth-inning RBI groundout cut Lancaster’s lead in half, but it was the last run scored in the game until Austin Moore pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game.

Fort Wayne TinCaps Lost 2-0 (12-15 on the season)

A trio of Quad Cities pitchers shut down the Fort Wayne TinCaps for only six hits as the TinCaps dropped the series opener against the River Bandits.

Joey Cantillo pitched his heart out for the TinCaps as he pitched five shutout innings and allowed two innings while striking out eight River Bandits but was matched by Matt Ruppenthal as the River Bandits’ starter tossed four shutout innings while allowing just two hits but walked four. Unfortunately, the TinCaps couldn’t turn that wildness into runs as they went 0-6 with runners in scoring position.

All the River Bandits needed was two runs and they came immediately after Cantillo exited the game. The new reliever, Dan Dallas, allowed a single to Emmanuel Valdez before Scott Schreiber took him deep to left for a two-run jack. The two runs were the only runs scored in the game but made the difference in today’s pitcher’s duel.
