Padres Down on the Farm: May 16 (Joey Cantillo faces minimum, Aaron Leasher strong again for LE)

Lake Elsinore played a double-header of sorts to finish a suspended game yesterday. Padres affiliates ended up playing five games Thursday, going 3-2 on the day.
Here is a recap of the day’s action.
El Paso Chihuahuas (27-13) Lost 10-2
El Paso has had a really strong season but Thursday night was not a good night. Starter Dillon Overton got roughed up for seven earned runs and did not get out of the first inning. The Albuquerque Isotopes scored seven in the first, and that was all they really needed. El Paso’s bullpen was able to hold them to just two more earned runs in the remaining eight innings.
El Paso scored two in the ninth to avoid the shutout thanks to a two-run single by Boog Powell.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (16-22) Lost 5-4
The Sod Poodles jumped out to a 3-0 early after scoring in the first three innings. Owen Miller got the scoring going in the first with an RBI single. Taylor Kohlwey doubled in a run in the second inning. Amarillo got a third run when Edward Olivares stole second and a run scored on the throwing error.
Frisco came storming back in the third inning against Amarillo starter Lake Bachar, who ended up walking home the tying run. Amarillo surrendered the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, trailing 4-3. They were able to tie it in the top of the ninth inning thanks to an RBI single by Ivan Castillo. However, the bullpen failed and gave up the walk-off win to Frisco in the bottom of the ninth.

Lake Elsinore Storm (19-21) Game 1: Won 2-1
The Storm had to finish a suspended game from Wednesday night due to rain. Elliot Ashbeck started the game Wednesday night, tossing two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. His start was cut short by the rain. Thursday, Jean Cosme came in and threw three solid innings, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Eguy Rosario came up with the bases loaded in the top of the second inning and hit a sacrifice fly, driving in the game’s first run and giving the Storm a 1-0 lead.
It was a battle of the bullpens until the Storm were able to add on in the ninth inning when Gabriel Arias hit his third home run of the season, extending the lead to 2-0. That ended up being vital as the Stockton Ports got a run in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to tie it, giving the Storm the 2-1 victory.

Lake Elsinore Storm (20-21) Game 2: Won 6-0
Game 2 of the double header was shortened to six innings, and the Storm took control early, scoring three runs in the first which was capped by a two-run triple by Eguy Rosario. Nate Easley extended the lead to 4-0 with an RBI groundout. That was all the support starter Aaron Leasher needed, fresh off of his strongest start of the season, he turned in yet another, tossing five shutout innings with five strikeouts and no walks.
Olivier Basabe sealed the deal with a two-run home run in the sixth, giving the Storm a 6-0 lead. Trevor Megill finished the game on the mound for Lake Elsinore, preserving the shutout with two shutout innings with three strikeouts.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (16-22) Won 9-0
It was a game of “threes” for the TinCaps. They scored three runs in three separate innings to account for their nine runs. In the bottom of the second, Nick Feight singled home a run, putting runners on second and third ahead of Jawuan Harris, who smacked a two-run single. Justin Lopez singled home a run in the third before a Luis Almanzar triple scored two runs, extending the lead to 6-0.

Joey Cantillo nearly pitched a perfect game, even if it was a rain-shortened one. The game only lasted six innings, but Cantillo pitched every single one almost flawlessly, only allowing one base runner with six strikeouts. He faced the minimum as his lone base runner was thrown out trying to get to second.
Fort Wayne added three runs with a triple by Justin Lopez and a double by Grant Little as the TinCaps routed Lansing.
