Padres Down on the Farm: June 7 (Bolanos wins debut in Amarillo/Jose Castillo pitches in Lake Elsinore)

With just one more week before Tri-City’s season starts, the rest of the Padres affiliates went 4-1 in Friday’s action.
Here’s a recap of the day’s games.
El Paso Chihuahuas: Won 6-2 (40-21 on the season)
The scoring came early in this one as not a run was scored after the fourth with both bullpens looking impressive after the quick start. El Paso jumped out to an early lead with a five-run second inning that was fueled by RBI doubles from Michael Gettys and Ty France. Webster Rivas then came up in the third and drove in his second run of the night with a solo homer. Omaha’s production was limited to a pair of solo homers of their own in the third and the fourth before Brad Wieck and Gerardo Reyes came in to pitch two innings each in relief of Dillon Overton and slam the door on the Storm Chasers.

Amarillo Sod Poodles: Won 12-3 (29-30 on the season)
The Sod Poodles managed to pull within a game of .500 with a blowout win against the Corpus Christi Hooks on Friday night. Half of Amarillo’s hits on the night were for extra bases, and the pitching staff backed up the big night from the offense with some strong performances on the mound. The Hooks jumped out with a short-lived lead in the second with a solo homer by Seth Beer, but that ended up as the only run that starter Ronald Bolanos allowed in his six innings on the night. Amarillo quickly responded with three runs in the top of third on a two-run triple by Ivan Castillo who was later brought in by an Edward Olivares single. The lineup continued to role in the fifth on a bases-clearing double by Owen Miller and a single by Kyle Overstreet that brought Miller around. The Sod Poodles got their second triple of the night courtesy of Ruddy Giron in the sixth to drive in two more runs. Three more runs came home in the top of the ninth on a double by Luis Torrens and a two-run shot by Overstreet. Corpus Christi managed to score two runs off Travis Radke in the ninth before he managed to shut the door on them.

Lake Elsinore Storm: Won 5-0 (30-29 on the season)
The Storm picked up their sixth shutout of the season in a fantastic performance from the pitching staff against the Lancaster JetHawks. Jose Castillo made a surprise rehab appearance tonight getting the start on the mound for Lake Elsinore. He pitched a hitless first inning while picking up two strikeouts and issuing a walk in his limited appearance tonight. Caleb Boushley then came on in the second and continued Castillo’s great start by keeping the JetHawks bats silent through his six innings, allowing just two baserunners. The Storm managed to help out the staff by bringing three runs around in the third inning on an error, groundout, and finally a single from Esteury Ruiz. Another two would score in the fourth courtesy of a sac fly from Luis Campusano and an error by Ryan Vilade on a grounder from Gabriel Arias that allowed Allen Cordoba to score. Recently converted Javy Guerra picked up a strikeout of his own when he came onto to pitch the eighth and righty Jordan Guerrero preserved the shutout with a perfect ninth inning.

Fort Wayne TinCaps: Lost 9-4 (28-31 on the season)
TinCaps pitchers were knocked around early and often by the Dayton Dragons as the bats also struggled to come alive for much of the game. 19-year-old righty Ramon Perez got the start for Fort Wayne but wasn’t able to make it out of the fifth inning as he was tagged for six runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. Dayton did a great job manufacturing runs early on as Perez did manage to hold them to just two extra-base hits, including a solo homer in the second and an RBI double in the fifth that chased Perez from the game. The bullpen didn’t look much better as Adrian Martinez and Jose Quezada allowed another three runs through their three and two-thirds innings of action. At the plate, the TinCaps didn’t manage to get a run across until the fifth when Xavier Edwards grounded out, and Michael Curry came around to score. They’d tack on another in the next inning on a bases-loaded walk by Kelvin Melean. The bats fell silent again until the ninth when Xavier Edwards drove Melean in on a double to left, and Justin Lopez drove in another run on a single two batters later. Blake Hunt came up next and grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to end the game.

Dominican Summer League Padres: Won 5-1 (3-3 on the season)
DSL action is underway, and the DSL Padres managed to get to .500 with a win over the White Sox. Righty Jesus Cisneros threw five innings for the Padres allowing just a single run on a sac-fly by White Sox second baseman Anthony Espinoza in Cisneros’s final inning on the mound. Three of the Padres runs were manufactured thanks to a throwing error by catcher Luis Pineda in the first on a steal attempt that allowed a run to score, a wild pitch in the fourth that brought Willmert Paula in, and then a bases-loaded walk that was issued to Albert Fabian in the eighth. The Padres final two runs scored in the ninth on Josttin Diaz‘s first home run of the season.
