Padres Down on the Farm: June 13 (Missions burst for 10/Figueroa’s four-hit day)

Padres minor league affiliates went 3-3 in six games on Friday.
Here is a recap of the games played.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 8-2 vs Round Rock) (34-33 on the season)
Trenton Brooks – 2-for-4, Two Singles

Rodolfo Duran – 2-for-4, RBI Single
Jackson Wolf – 3.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 3 K (79 pitches – 43 strikes)
El Paso’s lineup faced a drought in the heat of Round Rock, Texas, as the team lost 8-2. Four Chihuahuas players finished with multi-hit games, but the team did not have many chances with runners in scoring position. Trenton Brooks and Rodolfo Duran had two hits that led to runs scoring, as Brooks’ hit did not account for an RBI with a throwing error on the back end of the play. Rodolfo Duran hit a single to score Mike Brosseau, who had doubled in the game. Bryce Johnson hit his tenth double of the season, scoring a run.
Jackson Wolf labored against a Round Rock lineup with depth, lasting 3.1 innings and allowing five earned runs. Wolf allowed more balls hit at higher launch angles, and most notably, his pitch usage was much different than when he was having success earlier in the season. His four-seamer and sinker accounted for 62% of his pitches this game, but he was not landing the pitch in the zone. When Wolf led with his cutter and slider this season, he has been successful, and the fastball has generated whiffs as a result of being set up. Austin Krob allowed three runs in 1.2 innings of relief. Bryan Hoeing and Alek Jacob pitched the final three innings of the game, with Hoeing tossing 1.2 scoreless frames with two strikeouts.
San Antonio Missions (Won 10-9 vs Amarillo) (34-27 on the season)
Ripken Reyes – 1-for-3, Three-Run Home Run
Kai Murphy – 1-for-4, Two-Run Home Run
Victor Lizarraga – 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K (25 pitches – 15 strikes)
The Missions and Sod Poodles played a wild, back-and-forth affair on Friday night, but by the time the fireworks hit the sky, San Antonio had edged out the win by a 10-9 final. Victor Lizarraga started for the Missions, but lasted all of 1.1 innings before departing with an injury. He was checked out by the training staff and threw two warmup pitches, but departed, shaking out his wrist. The Missions relied on five relievers to finish the rest of the game, with Ryan Och and Stephen Jones logging season-high pitch counts. Jones had a rough fifth inning, allowing four runs on two home runs. Jake Higginbotham earned his fourth win of the season, tossing 1.2 innings with four strikeouts and one earned run allowed. Ethan Routzahnn came on for his first Missions appearance this season and had batters in stitches, as while he allowed two runs (one earned), he generated several uncomfortable swings from the middle of Amarillo’s lineup. Manuel Castro came on for the ninth and shut the door, working around a leadoff walk to retire the side and seal the win.

At the plate, the Missions certainly came to play. Ripken Reyes continues to be a thorn in the Soddies’ side, as Reyes launched a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning; It was Reyes’ third three-RBI base hit in as many nights. Brandon Valenzuela continued to perform well out of the DH spot in the lineup, finishing with an RBI triple in a multi-hit effort. Kai Murphy launched his first home run of the season, sending the Missions dugout into a frenzy. Romeo Sanabria gave San Antonio a definitive lead in the seventh inning, grounding out, but two runners on base came in to score on a throwing error from Amarillo first baseman Manuel Pena. Nerwilian Cedeno added an RBI double for good measure in the eighth inning. On the field, Ripken Reyes and Romeo Sanabria combined for an impressive relay in the seventh to cut down the tying run at third base.

Amarillo and San Antonio face off on Saturday at 5:05 pm Pacific. Henry Baez takes the mound for San Antonio against Amarillo’s Cesar Gomez. With more on Gomez, here is a report from Sideline Sports’ Sod Poodles writer, Austin Hartsfield:
Where Logan Clayton has struggled all season, Cesar Gomez has been the polar opposite. The right hander out of UT Arlington will make his third start of the year for the Sod Poodles after being primarily a bullpen piece before being promoted to Triple-A Reno where he’s lived the life of a Double-A-Triple-A bullpen arm, constantly bouncing back and forth at no fault of his own but riding the wave of transactions. Gomez, as a starter this season, has a 2.08 ERA with 4 BBs and 13 Ks. About 75% of the time with him, you will see his fastball, which has seen an uptick on average of 1 MPH from 2024 to 95 MPH, touching 97 at times, and a good slider that is a real speed reset from the 4-Seam at mid-80s. After that, you’ll see the cutter in the upper 80s that has been really effective as of late. Gomez will throw a curveball in every now and then, a pitch I think he should throw more. Despite more being effective against righties, Gomez still has yet to give up a homer to a left-handed batter this year. Every time Cesar has hit the field this season, he has given Amarillo a chance, and with the way that transactions have been, that’s all that they can ask for.
Fort Wayne TinCaps – Rained out vs South Bend
Fort Wayne’s scheduled game vs the South Bend Cubs was rained out on Friday, with a doubleheader scheduled to be played on Saturday afternoon. Eric Yost is tabbed for the first of two games, and it is likely that Isaiah Lowe toes the rubber for the nightcap.
Update – Tonight’s game (6/13) is a rainout.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 7-1 vs Visalia) (29-32 on the season)
Victor Figueroa – 4-for-4, RBI Double
B.Y. Choi – 2-for-4, Two Singles
Kleiber Olmedo – 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 3 K (84 pitches – 48 strikes)
Storm right-hander Kleiber Olmedo had one of his most economical starts of the season, tossing four innings of two-run baseball. Olmedo walked three and struck out three, allowing two runs on three hits. While he did not get too many whiffs, Olmedo kept the ball on the ground, as six of his 12 outs recorded came via the groundball. Coming into the game, Olmedo has succeeded at generating worm-burners, getting grounders on 54.5% of batted balls against him. Ruben Salinas allowed three runs in 1.1 innings, and Xavier Ruiz allowed two runs in 1.1 innings as well. Igor Gil had the strongest outing of the game, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Victor Figueroa had a strong day at the plate, as the Rawhide failed to retire the Storm’s first baseman. Figueroa went 4-for-4 with an RBI double and has posted a 130 wRC+ in his first 19 games in Lake Elsinore. B.Y. Choi continues to heat up, hitting two singles in four at-bats. Choi is hitting .357 with an .848 OPS in June after a cold start to the season. Chase Valentine had a single in four at-bats, with Zach Evans scoring the team’s lone run. The top four in the lineup were held hitless in the loss.
ACL Padres (Won 4-1 vs ACL Reds) (9-22 on the season)
Gustavo Marquez – 2-for-4, Double, Three RBI
Jesus Castro – 1-for-2, RBI Single
J.B. Wendelken – 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Luis Maracara – 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
The ACL Padres won in comeback fashion, taking their Friday night game over the ACL Reds by a 4-1 final. Gustavo Marquez was a key cog in the comeback effort, finishing 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Marquez had a game-tying fielder’s choice in the sixth inning to score Ismael Javier, and Jesus Castro gave the team a 2-1 lead on an RBI single to score Yoiber Ocopio. Marquez provided some insurance in the top of the seventh with a two-RBI double. Both Ocopio and Javier scored two runs in the game.
On the mound, four pitchers combined to throw a one-hitter. J.B. Wendelken made his second rehab appearance as the opener, tossing a scoreless inning with a strikeout. Tanner Smith tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out two. The former Harvard right-hander has struck out 33.3% of batters faced while walking 9.5%, albeit in a small sample of 8.2 innings. Luis Maracara pitched his most dominant outing of the season, tossing three hitless innings and fanning four. While Maracara’s performance has not been as dominant as his last season’s performance in the DSL, he has pitched well for one of the youngest players at the ACL level this season. Sitting in the low 90’s (thank you Goodyear Ballpark for having a radar gun), Maracara was efficient and his curveball registered a 100% whiff rate while also setting up high fastballs for the K. Dariel Polanco was summoned for the seventh inning, and posted a 1-2-3 seventh to log his first professional save.
DSL Padres Gold (Won 5-4 vs DSL Brewers Blue) (5-4 on the season)
Jose Verdugo – 1-for-4, Two-RBI Double
Kevin Tambuirini – 3-for-5, Walk-off RBI Single
Raymel Belliard – 4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
Raymel Belliard tossed 4.2 scoreless innings for the Padres Gold, striking out three batters, Scoring was limited in the early going, with the Padres Gold finally breaking through in the fifth inning. Jose Verdugo hit a two-RBI double to stake the team to a 2-0 lead, and Jhojan Downer hit his first double of the season to score Verdugo. Florangel Vasquez allowed four runs in 2.1 innings of work, and even though Moises Valdez had given the Padres Gold a fourth run in the seventh inning, the game was tied when Vasquez departed. Jose Ortega tossed 1.1 innings to get the team to the bottom of the ninth tied. Kevin Tamburini came up with runners on second and third and two outs, only to single in the game-winning run.
DSL Padres Brown (Lost 5-2 vs DSL Royals Ventura) (4-4 on the season)
Sebastian Pena – 2-for-4, Double, Run Scored
Abraham Bastidas – 1-for-1, RBI Double
Kelvin Marte – 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R (1 ER), 3 BB, 1 K
The DSL Padres Brown lost a close one against the DSL Royals Ventura. Sebastian Pena had two hits out of the leadoff spot, scoring a run in the game. Pena also singled to lead to a run scoring, although he was not credited with the RBI. Yonaiker Hernandez had a double in the game, as did Abraham Bastidas. Bastidas came on late in the game and doubled in Pena in the seventh inning to bring the score to 5-2.
Kelvin Marte made the start, allowing one earned run in four innings of work. Marte did not strike out many, only punching out one, but excelled at generating pop-ups for outs. Daniel Burciaga made his debut, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk in two innings, striking out two.
