Padres Down on the Farm: July 21 (De Vries homers for LE)
San Diego Padres affiliates went 1-3 on Sunday.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 6-4 in 10 innings vs Sugar Land) (40-56 on the season)
Eguy Rosario – 1-for-2, RBI Single
Jose Azocar – 2-for-4, Two-Run Home Run
Nabil Crismatt – 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K (44 pitches, 25 strikes)
Starter Nabil Crismatt tossed two shutout innings, striking out four. The right-hander has pitched to a 6.10 ERA in his return to the Padres organization, but he has a 4.00 ERA in his last three starts and could be an option should the Padres need a starter this week in either Washington or Baltimore. Eguy Rosario went 1-for-2 with three walks in the game, having reached base at a .429 clip this month. Jose Azocar hit a two-run homer, and Tirso Ornelas walked once in the loss.
San Antonio Missions (Lost 4-3 vs Arkansas) (43-45 on the season)
Cole Cummings – 1-for-4, Two-Run Home Run
Juan Zabala – 1-for-4, Home Run
Jared Kollar – 5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 9 K (82 pitches, 58 strikes)
Despite taking a 3-2 lead into the ninth, San Antonio lost in walk-off fashion against the Arkansas Travelers. Starter Jared Kollar delivered yet another quality outing, tossing 5.2 innings of two-run baseball. Kollar has made a name for himself this season, striking out a season-high nine batters and showing signs of dominance throughout. Cole Cummings hit a two-run home run in the first inning, his eighth of the season, and Juan Zabala hit his second home run of the year. Ryan Och made another strong outing at Double-A, striking out three of four batters faced. Reliever Ethan Routzahn was charged with the loss, allowing two runs in the ninth inning.
Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 6-3 vs Lake County) (37-53 on the season)
Griffin Doersching – 2-for-2, Two Doubles, Two RBI
Colton Bender – 1-for-4, RBI Double
Henry Baez – 4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K (64 pitches, 40 strikes)
First baseman Griffin Doersching reached base four times on two doubles and two walks, and the TinCaps offense recorded six walks against Captain pitching. However, the team was only able to string along three hits in the game. Starter Henry Baez went 4.1 strong innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk, striking out two. Baez wasn’t getting the whiffs he has in some of his recent outings, but he was efficient with his pitches after battling command earlier this season. Sam Whiting was dealt the loss, allowing two runs in 3.2 innings of relief, throwing 45 pitches. Whiting pitched well in Single-A this season and has pitched to a 2.14 ERA & 1.24 WHIP in eight High-A appearances, averaging 2.2 innings per outing.
Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 9-2 vs Rancho Cucamonga) (45-43 on the season)
Leodalis De Vries – 1-for-5, Three-Run Home Run
Jose Sanabria – 3-for-5, RBI
Isaiah Lowe – 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K (41 pitches, 20 strikes)
In an abbreviated outing, Isaiah Lowe allowed two runs on a first-inning two-run homer. Lowe punched out two and walked two, a sign he did not have his best stuff. However, five Storm relievers combined to throw seven innings of two-hit, shutout baseball the rest of the way, with Johan Moreno striking out three in two innings for the win. Jose Sanabria and Jacob Campbell chipped away at the deficit with productive outs and a dropped third strike play. The team really broke open the floodgates in the seventh, with Jose Sanabria’s third single of the day making the score 5-2. Then came the thunder, as Leodalis De Vries rocketed his seventh home run of the year to put the game out of slam range, closing the inning with an 8-2 lead. Ethan Long walked four times, and Braedon Karpathios walked three times in the win.
