Padres minor league affiliates went 2-3 on Wednesday.

Here is our daily recap of games played. 

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 6-3 vs Sacramento) (37-46 on the season)

Blake Hunt – 1-for-4, Home Run, Two RBI

Luis Rengifo – 2-for-3, Home Run, Two RBI

Matt Waldron – 4 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K (60 pitches – 42 strikes)

Matt Waldron threw four innings of one-run ball in his latest rehab start. The right-hander allowed eight hits, but just one run, picking up just one strikeout. Waldron’s stat line was solid, but the right-hander has continued the trend where his performances are solid in El Paso but not as solid at the major league level. Triston McKenzie allowed two runs in one-third of an inning, as the right-hander again struggled to command his fastball. Michael Flynn allowed the tying run to score, but nothing more from there. Flynn earned the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Ethan Routzahn bridged the gap from there, retiring all five batters he faced in 1.2 innings. Alek Jacob allowed one hit in 1.1 innings, but no runs, closing out the game and earning his fifth save. 

The Chihuahuas launched two home runs en route to a Wednesday win. Blake Hunt, starting behind the dish, hit a two-run home run in the 2nd inning. Hunt golfed a changeup from Carson Whisenhunt into the left field seats, giving El Paso a 2-1 lead. Marcos Castanon doubled on a fly ball to center field in the third, scoring Bryce Johnson. Nick Solak, who is back with the Chihuahuas after re-signing with the Padres late last week, hit a go-ahead RBI double down the line in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Johnson and turning the tie into a 4-3 Chihuahuas lead. Solak scored one out later, as Luis Rengifo launched a two-run home run to left center. Rengifo, the newest Chihuahua, went 2-for-3 in his El Paso debut. 

San Antonio MIssions (Lost 2-1 vs Amarillo) (34-43 on the season)

Braedon Karpathios – 1-for-4, Triple, Run Scored

Tirso Ornelas – 1-for-4, Double

Ian Koenig – 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K (81 pitches – 52 strikes)

Ian Koenig threw five scoreless innings in the Missions’ 2-1 loss on Wednesday, striking out five batters. Koenig allowed four hits, none for extra bases, and wrapped up his outing with a ground ball double play. The right-hander now has a 4.03 ERA on the season. Josh Mallitz pitched a scoreless sixth inning, and Garrett Hawkins returned to the mound with a scoreless seventh inning. Clay Edmondson fired a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts, his second scoreless outing in three games at Double-A. Tucker Musgrove came on for the save, but a walk, two wild pitches, and another walk saw the tying run on third base. Musgrove gave up a jam-job single to tie the game, and a sacrifice bunt later, the right-hander was chased from the game. Harry Gustin walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, setting up the double play. Rather than play at double play depth to play for the end of the inning, San Antonio kept the infield in with one out, The decision cost the Missions, as a double play bouncer from Demetrio Crisantes only yielded one out, with the go-ahead run scoring. Gustin ended the frame with a strikeout. The Missions only picked up six hits in the game, all coming over the first seven innings. Braedon Karpathios tripled in the second inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Albert Fabian. Tirso Ornelas hit a double against Amarillo starter Ashton Izzi, the team’s second and last extra-base hit of the game. Carson Tucker and Jake Cunningham each hit a single in the loss, with the team not drawing a walk all game. 

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 8-7 vs Great Lakes) (32-45 on the season)

Kavares Tears – 2-for-5, Two Home Runs, Four RBI

Kasen Wells – 2-for-4, Double, Two RBI

Winyer Chourio – 2.2 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 5 BB, 4 K (70 pitches – 34 strikes)

Right-hander Winyer Chourio walked five batters in 2.2 innings, ultimately giving up four earned runs. Chourio only threw 34 of his 70 pitches for strikes, with three runs scoring after he departed the game. Chourio still struck out four, but was unable to consistently get ahead of batters. Javier Chacon allowed a grand slam to Samuel Munoz to give the Loons a 5-2 lead, allowing three further runs in one inning. Daison Acosta threw 2.1 scoreless innings on 26 pitches, striking out two. Ryan Och struck out five batters in two innings, walking two but allowing no runs. Igor Gil struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning. 

The TinCaps lineup delivered a valiant comeback effort, but fell short in the end. Kavares Tears was at the heart of the team’s efforts, going 2-for-5 with two home runs. Tears drove in four runs for the TinCaps, picking up the team’s fourth individual multi-home-run game. Ryan Wideman reached base twice in the game, scoring one run. Two of the team’s four walks were drawn by Oswaldo Linares, and Jack Costello went 1-for-3 with a single and a run scored. Kasen Wells got the team within one run in the eighth, as he lined a two-run double down the left field line to score Costello and Linares. Fort Wayne went 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position, but failed to come through in the ninth to seal the loss. 

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 11-6 vs Stockton) (42-35 on the season)

Dawson Willis – 1-for-3, Home Run, RBI, Two Runs Scored

Jorge Quintana – 1-for-3, Triple, RBI, Run Scored

Carlos Medina – 3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K (56 pitches – 41 strikes)

The Storm scored four runs in the first inning, but were outscored 11-2 over the final eight innings to lose 11-6. The Storm drew five walks and stole five bases en route to said four-spot in the first inning, sending eight men to the plate. Dawson Willis hit his third home run with the Storm in the third inning, and Dylan Grego scored the team’s final run on a groundout from Conner Westenburg. Grego reached base two times, hitting a triple and scoring a run. Truitt Madonna went 1-for-4 as the DH, hitting a single. Jorge Quintana hit his first triple of the season, driving in one of four first-inning runs. 

Carlos Medina allowed one run in three innings of work, striking out three. Medina continues to be effective in the strike zone, as 41 of his 56 pitches went for strikes. The right-hander also did not allow an extra-base hit, limiting the Ports’ ability to make hard contact. Brandon Langley took the loss, as he threw only four of 27 pitches for strikes, walking five batters. Rordy Mejia allowed a go-ahead three-run home run, picking up two outs in the game. Jordan Valenzuela struck out three batters, but allowed two runs in 1.1 innings. Sean Barnett threw two innings of one-run baseball, striking out two against three walks. Yoesmerli Beltre allowed one run in 1.1 innings of relief, striking out one. 

ACL Padres (Won 12-4 vs ACL Rangers) (25-19 on the season)

Jesmaylin Arias – 3-for-3, Home Run, Four RBI

Moises Valdez – 3-for-4, Two Triples, Three RBI

Ryan Reed – 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Erick Batista – 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K

The Padres offense surged on a 98-degree night, as the Padres hung 12 runs on the Rangers. Jesmaylin Arias was responsible for one-third of the runs scored, as the Padres right fielder had three hits, including a home run. Arias drove in four runs in the game to lead the team. Moises Valdez drove in three runs, hitting a pair of triples and leading the team in total bases with seven. Eddson Martinez drove in one run while picking up two hits, including a double. Jack Mathey drove in a run on a ground-rule double, and Abraham Bastidas drew two walks, scoring a run. 

Ryan Reed made his season debut, striking out one batter in a scoreless inning. The former Pitt left-hander had not thrown a pitch in game action this season before Wednesday night. Erick Batista threw four innings of long relief, striking out seven. Batista has regularly been in the mid-90s with his fastball, which has allowed him to be successful against ACL batters with limited experience against such velocity. Jeronimo Palmeros allowed three runs in two innings, closing out a blowout win.
