Padres affiliates closed out the week going 1-3 on Sunday.

Here is our daily recap of games played. 

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 2-1 vs Oklahoma City) (53-79 on the season)

Ethan Salas – 1-for-3, RBI Single, Walk

Nick Solak – 2-for-4, Two Singles

Nick Pivetta – 4.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K (64 pitches – 44 strikes)

Right-hander Nick Pivetta made his second rehab start, reaching 64 pitches in his outing against Oklahoma City. Pivetta was sharp and, as usual, aggressive in the strike zone. 44 of his 64 pitches landed in the strike zone, and opposing batters chased out of the zone 31% of the time, a solid mark for the right-hander. Pivetta struck out seven batters while walking just one, and his fastball continued to possess its late rising action despite the altitude of Oklahoma City’s ballpark. Sean Boyle pitched 2.2 innings in relief. The Chihuahuas’ regularly scheduled starter allowed one run on five hits, striking out two. Ethan Routzahn threw a scoreless eighth inning on just six pitches, keeping the game tied.

While El Paso could have kept Routzahn out for the ninth, manager Pete Zamora called on Alek Jacob in a tie game. Ryan Ward opened the inning with a single off the El Paso closer, and moved to second on a flyout. El Paso intentionally walked Ryan Fitzgerald to get the right-on-right matchup with Matt Gorski at the dish. On Jacob’s first pitch, OKC’s first baseman grounded a chopper into right field, scoring the game-winning run.

El Paso’s only run of the game came off the bat of Ethan Salas (pause for dramatic effect). Salas pulled a sinker in on the hands into right field for a base hit in the first inning to score Bryce Johnson. The hit gave Salas his 24th RBI in his 24th game with the Chihuahuas. Salas also caught for Nick Pivetta, and defensively, Salas threw out the speedy Hyeseong Kim attempting to steal second base on a curveball. Nick Solak had two singles in the contest, and Rodolfo Duran went 1-for-4 with a single as the team’s DH. 

San Antonio Missions (Lost 8-6 vs Springfield) (55-71 on the season)

Alex McCoy – 3-for-4, Home Run, Double, Three RBI

Braedon Karpathios – 2-for-4, Double, Single, RBI

Eric Yost – 4.1 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 2 BB, 4 K (72 pitches – 49 strikes)

San Antonio rallied but came up short to end their penultimate road trip of the season. The offense matched Springfield with ten hits, but unlike their opponents, the Missions were unable to slug their way into a commanding position. Braedon Karpathios was back atop the lineup, picking up two hits. Karpathios’ fifth-inning single scored one of the team’s three runs in the frame. Kai Roberts opened the scoring with a sac fly to score Justin DeCriscio. Alex McCoy had an RBI single in the inning as well, though it wouldn’t be McCoy’s biggest swing of the game. McCoy’s seventh-inning home run was that swing, as his two-run blast cut the deficit and brought the Missions within slam range at 8-5. San Antonio got a run in the ninth on a Romeo Sanabria sac fly, but nothing more. Justin DeCriscio went 3-for-3 with three singles and a walk in the game, and is now slashing .364/.462/.424 with an .886 OPS in his first 10 games with the Missions. 

Alex McCoy delivered a three-hit game in San Antonio’s 8-6 loss to Springfield on Sunday.

Starter Eric Yost pitched into the fifth inning, but Springfield got to him for three home runs for a second consecutive start. Yost allowed eight runs in 4.1 innings, with three runs coming on singles in the second inning. Springfield launched all three home runs of theirs in the fifth inning, chasing the right-hander from the game. Harry Gustin allowed an inherited runner to score, but nothing more in two-thirds of an inning. Clay Edmondson entered the game in the sixth, retiring one batter before departing the contest due to an arm injury. Edmondson missed wide with a 2-0 pitch before being removed from the contest. Garrett Hawkins entered in relief and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings on 35 pitches. The right-hander struck out four of nine batters faced, generating nine whiffs on 25 strikes.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 9-3 vs Dayton) (52-72 on the season)

Robbie Lavey – 2-for-4, Double, Four RBI

Lamar King Jr – 3-for-4, Two Doubles, Triple, Four RBI

Winyer Chourio – 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 4 K (91 pitches – 50 strikes)

Fort Wayne closed out their home slate with a 9-3 win over Dayton. Robbie Lavey and Lamar King Jr each drove in four runs in the contest, combining to go 5-for-8 with four extra-base hits. Lavey hit a double and single in the game, with his fourth-inning two-bagger tying the contest at two runs all. King Jr then scored Lavey with an RBI double. The TinCaps posted a five-spot in the fifth inning, loading the bases before Ryan Gerety drew a bases-loaded walk to score their fourth run. Robbie Lavey then drove in two runs with an RBI single, scoring Conner Westenburg and Kasen Wells. Lamar King Jr then hit his second double of the game to score two more. King Jr’s triple in the seventh scored Rosman Verdugo for the final TinCaps run at Parkview Field this season.

Winyer Chourio drew the start for the TinCaps, and pitched five innings of two-run baseball. Chourio was effectively wild, walking five but allowing just two runs. The right-hander struck out four batters, with five of his outs recorded coming via ground balls. Chourio will likely make one more start this season, and he has now struck out 30.5% of batters faced this season between two levels. Isaiah Lowe threw a scoreless sixth inning in relief. Jack Pineau pitched the seventh inning, allowing a solo home run and striking out one batter. Pineau, while he has pitched in relief this season, could see time as a starting pitcher next season. Sean Barnett threw a scoreless eighth inning, and Jeferson Villabona closed out the win with a scoreless ninth inning.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 16-13 vs Rancho Cucamonga) (62-64 on the season)

Joe Tiroly – 2-for-5, Home Run, Two RBI

Alex Conover – 2-for-6, Two Singles, Three RBI

Luis Maracara – 1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 1 K (38 pitches – 19 strikes)

In their final regular season road game, the Lake Elsinore Storm tallied 13 runs in a losing effort. Five members of the Storm had multi-hit games, and the team drew nine walks in the contest. Joe Tiroly’s recent heater continued, as the Storm’s third baseman had two hits. Tiroly launched the team’s only home run of the game, his sixth of the season. Elliot Lascelles had two hits atop the lineup, walking once and scoring a run. Dawson Willis drove in one run on a bases-loaded walk, and Qrey Lott hit a two-run single as part of a seven-run second. Jose Verdugo had two singles, driving in two in the second inning. Alex Conover reached base on an error to score two runs, giving the Storm a 7-0 lead. 

Luis Maracara was chased after one inning, walking four batters in the second before departing. Rordy Mejia got two outs on a double play, which scored a run. Mejia then allowed an RBI single and another single, but the second single saw a runner thrown out at the plate by Elliot Lascelles. Mejia’s strong outing imploded in the third, as the right-hander walked three and gave up three hits. The right-hander also committed a throwing error on a pickoff to score the tying run. At 7-7, Miguel Alvarez entered in the fourth inning, pitching a scoreless fourth before a go-ahead home run by John Wimmer put the Storm down 8-7. The Quakes added on four more runs off Alvarez in the sixth, finishing a home run shy of the cycle in the inning as a team. Albert Roblez threw a scoreless seventh inning before the Storm rallied for three in the eighth. After walks to Augie Lopez and Jesmaylin Arias, pinch-hitter Nu’u Contrades drew a one-out walk. Alex Conover singled to score two runs, putting runners at first and second. Though Chris MuHugh hit into a forceout up the middle, he went on to steal second base on a double steal, with Contrades crossing home to score the Storm’s 11th run. It was now a one-run game. 

Albert Roblez was back on the mound for the eighth, but the long top of the inning had an effect on the right-hander. Roblez struck out his second batter faced, but with the third strike being a wild pitch, Joswa Lugo reached first base. Two singles later, the Storm were down by two runs. Roblez struck out his next batter, which in any normal inning would have been the third out. This wasn’t that, and Roblez hit his next batter. A balk and single later, Rancho Cucamonga led 16-11 and Roblez was relieved by Florangel Vasquez. Vasquez ended the inning with no further scoring. 

Joe Tiroly led off the ninth with a solo home run, but Quakes pitcher Angelo Smith retired the next two Storm hitters. Jesmaylin Arias drew a walk before Elliot Lascelles lined his second single of the game to right field. Nu’u Contrades then lined a single to center field to score Arias, bringing the tying run to the plate in Alex Conover. Now facing Brayan Vergara, Conover grounded out to end the game.
