Padres minor league affiliates went 1-4 on Saturday. 

Here is our daily recap of games played. 

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 10-6 vs Tacoma) (70-60 on the season)

Ripken Reyes – 3-for-4, Three Doubles, Three RBI

Tim Locastro – 3-for-3, Double, Three Runs Scored

JP Sears – 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K (30 pitches – 19 strikes)

El Paso starter JP Sears threw 30 pitches in the first inning, which set off a chain reaction for the Chihuahuas’ pitching staff. Sears gave up one run on two hits, striking out two batters. Omar Cruz pitched three innings in long relief, striking out two. Cruz did get knocked around a bit, as he allowed three earned runs on four hits, walking two. Misael Tamarez allowed two runs on five hits in his own two innings of relief. Bradgley Rodriguez pitched a scoreless inning in the seventh, getting all three outs via the ground ball. Francis Pena allowed three runs on three hits in a wild pitch, prompting El Paso to turn to catcher Cody Roberts for the ninth; Roberts pitched a scoreless ninth. 

At the plate, Ripken Reyes had his best game of the season that was not against the Amarillo Sod Poodles, as he hit three doubles and drove in three runs. Reyes was one of two Chihuahuas batters with a three-hit game. Tim Locastro had three hits, scoring three runs for the Chihuahuas. Tirso Ornelas had two singles and scored a run in the loss. Outside of Reyes, Clay Dungan and Yonathan Perlaza picked up RBI on ninth-inning bases-loaded walks by Tacoma’s Troy Taylor. 

San Antonio Missions (Lost 8-4 vs Frisco) (60-65 on the season)

Kai Murphy – 2-for-4, RBI Single

Marcos Castanon – 1-for-4, Double, RBI

Victor Lizarraga – 3 IP, 7 H, 6 R (5 ER), 4 BB, 2 K (82 pitches – 47 strikes)

San Antonio’s pitching staff walked ten batters in a losing effort, falling 8-4 to Frisco on Saturday. Victor Lizarraga, coming off two elite starts, faltered against the RoughRiders, allowing two runs in the first and four in the third. Lizarraga entered the game with a career-high .329 BABIP this season, and the struggles continued, with seven hits allowed. Kevin Kopps struck out two in two scoreless innings. Cole Paplham came on in the sixth inning, but the right-hander’s command was erratic, as he walked three in the inning. Two of three batters walked came in to score in an inning of work by the Green Bay native, and he now sits at a 1.93 WHIP this season.

Kai Murphy drove in one of four Missions runs on an RBI single, finishing with two hits for San Antonio. Albert Fabian led off the game with a double, scoring on a groundout by Marcos Castanon. San Antonio did not score again until the eighth inning, where they pushed across three. Murphy’s RBI single scored run number two, and a wild pitch by Avery Weems scored Anthony Vilar. Murphy came in to score on a groundout by Oswaldo Linares. 

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 5-2 vs Dayton) (55-69 on the season)

Zach Evans – 1-for-4, RBI Single

Rosman Verdugo – 2-for-4, Two Singles, Walk

Luis Gutierrez – 7 IP, 7 H, 5 R (2 ER), 1 BB, 7 K (96 pitches – 64 strikes)

Luis Gutierrez pitched seven innings for the TinCaps, allowing two earned runs, but there’s a catch. Gutierrez was charged with three unearned runs as well, as a result of a fielding error by Rosman Verdugo in the first. Dayton struck for four runs in the first inning, but Gutierrez worked to limit the baserunners throughout the rest of his outing, as only one more run scored on a passed ball. Gutierrez struck out seven batters and has a 7.8 K/9 in 60 innings at Fort Wayne. Braian Salazar pitched a scoreless inning in his TinCaps debut, and Luis German fanned one in an inning of relief. 

The TinCaps tallied ten hits in the game, but left 13 runners on base in the loss. Zach Evans drove in one of the TinCaps’ two runs, singling in the fourth with the bases loaded to score a run. Chase Valentine hit a sacrifice fly to score Kai Roberts for the ‘Caps’ second run. Rosman Verdugo and Jack Costello both had two-hit games, with Verdugo reaching base in three plate appearances. Kai Roberts finished 1-for-3 with two walks and a single, and Lamar King Jr had a double in five at-bats. 

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 6-0 vs Rancho Cucamonga) (55-70 on the season)

Cardell Thibodeaux – 2-for-4, Double

Justin DeCriscio – 2-for-4, Two Singles

Cameron Nohos – 1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K (29 pitches – 16 strikes)

Lake Elsinore lost in shutout fashion in their penultimate home game of the season. Cameron Nohos made his pro debut for the Storm, allowing two runs in one inning of work. Nohos was able to record his first two professional strikeouts in the process. Charlie Walker also made his professional debut, allowing two runs in the second inning. Igor Gil threw 2.2 innings of one-run baseball, striking out four batters. Right-hander Clay Edmondson struck out two in 2.1 innings, not allowing a run. The UNC Asheville draftee has pitched scoreless ball in his first four professional appearances. Bernard Jose allowed a solo homer in two innings of relief, striking out two. At the plate, Cardell Thibodeaux and Kavares Tears had doubles in the loss. Thibodeaux and Justin DeCriscio were the only two batters for the Storm with two hits. Despite six hits all game, Lake Elsinore went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the loss.

DSL Padres Gold (Won 12-5 vs DSL Athletics) (Won DSL Cup Finals 2-1; 6-1 in Postseason)

Abraham Bastidas – 1-for-2, Two RBI

Jhojan Downer – 2-for-3, RBI Single, Two Runs Scored

Jeromino Palmeros – 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 3 K

The inaugural DSL Cup belongs to the San Diego Padres’ DSL affiliate, as the Padres Gold outslugged the DSL Athletics in a series-clinching win. Moises Valdez had two doubles out of the leadoff spot, scoring a run. Jose Verdugo had two hits in six at-bats, driving in two runs. Isaac Ponce had an RBI double, and Abraham Bastidas had two RBI in the win. Santiago Contreras scored two runs in the game, finishing with two hits. 

Jeronimo Palmeros started the biggest game of his young career, pitching five innings of five-run baseball. Palmeros struck out three and allowed seven hits, but with the Padres Gold’s lineup slugging, Palmeros gave the team enough length in the series clincher. Dalvi Nunez, who started the Padres Gold’s Championship Round clincher, pitched three hitless innings with four strikeouts to hold the lead. Leading 12-5 in the ninth, the Padres Gold turned to Jeferson Villabona, and Villabona recorded two outs before inducing a groundout from Alejandro Pereira to seal the Cup Finals win.
