Padres affiliates went 3-2 on Saturday.

Let’s dive right into the games played. 

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 3-2 vs Oklahoma City) (53-78 on the season)

Carlos D. Rodriguez – 3-for-4, Triple, Double

Ethan Salas – 1-for-3, RBI Single, Walk

Jagger Haynes – 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K (78 pitches – 49 strikes)

Left-hander Jagger Haynes pitched a scoreless start in the altitude of Oklahoma City. Haynes worked five innings against the Comets, striking out five batters. 27.3% of swings against the Chihuahuas’ starter came up empty, and Haynes has now pitched five innings in each of his last four starts. In five starts during August, Haynes pitched to a 3.38 ERA in 24 innings, striking out 18 against nine walks. Reliever Hans Crouse bounced back from a rough patch to pitch a scoreless sixth. Brent Honeywell made his return to the Padres organization official, pitching the seventh inning. Honeywell was charged with two unearned runs, as a tailor-made double play grounder to Sung-Mun Song ended up in right field after Song attempted to turn two on the run. While El Paso managed to tie up the game, Logan Gillaspie was unable to keep the game tied. Dodgers No. 15 prospect Zach Ehrhard took a Gillaspie changeup to dead center, giving OKC a 3-2 lead. 

Carlos D. Rodriguez finished a home run shy of the cycle in the loss. Rodriguez picked up a triple and a double in the game, stealing his 18th base of the season as well. Mason McCoy walked and stole his 33rd base of the season as a pinch-hitter. Samad Taylor went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts before being pulled from the game, and Kai Murphy made his Chihuahuas debut, taking over for Taylor. It was a full-circle moment for Murphy, whose father at one point managed the Chihuahuas (current Brewers manager Pat Murphy). Ethan Salas started behind the dish, going 1-for-3. Salas reached base twice, drawing a walk and hitting a game-tying RBI single against All-Star left-hander Justin Wrobleski. Salas won an eight-pitch battle to do so, with his single coming off the bat at 94.9 mph. Nick Pratto hit an RBI single to score Nick Solak, reaching base twice in the game. Clay Dungan reached base twice as well. 

San Antonio Missions (Won 6-2 vs Springfield) (55-70 on the season)

Braedon Karpathios – 2-for-5, Home Run, RBI

Ryan Jackson – 3-for-4, Three Singles, Two Runs Scored

Fernando Sanchez – 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 6 BB, 2 K (95 pitches – 55 strikes)

The top of the Missions lineup got busy against Springfield, which helped lead to the team’s first win of the series. Braedon Karpathios, Ryan Jackson, and Romeo Sanabria combined to go 8-for-13 with two extra base hits and four runs scored. Karpathios led off the game with his 15th home run of the season, a solo home run just inside the foul line in left field. Karpathios continues to hit the ball to the opposite field, and it’s with authority as well. Ryan Jackson, meanwhile, scored two runs while reaching base four times. Jackson had three singles and a walk, and both times he scored were on a base hit off the bat of Romeo Sanabria. Sanabria had a double and a single, both of which scored a run. Albert Fabian hit a two-run home run in the third inning, scoring Sanabria. 

Missions starter Fernando Sanchez pitched his longest start of the season, pitching into the sixth inning. Sanchez only gave up four hits, with three being singles. Sanchez only struck out two, issuing six walks. Despite the six bases on balls issued, Sanchez generated six groundouts and a double play on the ground as well. The left-hander’s outing falls into the “effectively wild” category, but it was a much-needed boost to the team’s rotation. Johan Moreno ended the sixth inning with a double play, stranding the bases loaded. Moreno threw 2.2 innings total, generating 10 swings and misses from the Cardinals. Josh Mallitz allowed an unearned run in the ninth inning, but sealed the win regardless. 

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 7-3 vs Dayton) (51-72 on the season)

Carlos E. Rodriguez – 3-for-4, Three Singles, Two RBI

Kasen Wells – 1-for-4. Single, RBI

Kannon Kemp – 4 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 7 K (79 pitches – 52 strikes)

Right-hander Kannon Kemp pitched four innings, striking out seven. The swing and miss results were impressive as well, but the batted ball results were not ideal. Kemp was charged with three home runs allowed and six runs in his outing. All six runs allowed came on two-run home runs, with two coming off sliders. Outside of that, Kemp’s outing was actually promising based on pitch data and strikes. 52 of 79 pitches from the right-hander landed for strikes, and Kemp generated a season-high 20 swings and misses. His fastball was regularly landing at 95-97 mph, topping out at 98 mph. Kemp only walked two batters and threw first-pitch strikes to 15 of 22 batters faced. Carlos Medina threw three innings of one-run baseball in relief, allowing a solo home run to Jacob Friend. Medina struck out three batters in his outing, walking one. Bernard Jose struck out one batter in two scoreless innings. 

The TinCaps’ offense picked up three runs, but was unable to slug back into a comeback. Carlos E. Rodriguez had three hits in the contest and was responsible for two runs scoring. Kasen Wells hit an RBI single in the sixth inning, scoring Yimy Tovar. Rodriguez scored both Kerrington Cross and Luke Cantwell in the seventh on a ground ball single. Cantwell reached base twice in the loss, as did Yoiber Ocopio. Ryan Gerety drew two walks atop the lineup. 

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 4-2 vs Rancho Cucamonga) (62-63 on the season)

Joe Tiroly – 3-for-4, Two Home Runs, Three RBI

Qrey Lott – 3-for-4, Double, Stolen Base

Tyler Schmitt – 3.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K (55 pitches – 34 strikes)

Padres 7th-round pick Joe Tiroly had his first career multi-home run game as a professional in the Storm’s 4-2 win over the Quakes. Tiroly launched home runs in back-to-back at-bats in the fourth and fifth innings, with one home run going to left field and one to right center. Tiroly drove in three of the team’s four runs, scoring two. Qrey Lott had three hits, including a double, while swiping his 25th base of the season. Chris McHugh had two hits, including a double, and scored a run on an RBI double from Nu’u Contrades. Contrades came in to score a run on an RBI single from Tiroly. Dawson Willis singled as part of a two-hit game, and Elliot Lascelles walked and stole his third base of the season in the win. 

Tyler Schmitt pitched into the fourth inning in his start, allowing two runs. The right-hander struck out just one batter, with a 3-4 split of groundouts to flyouts recorded. Schmitt recorded five swings and misses, laboring through a 27-pitch first inning. One run charged to Schmitt came after he departed, as Andrew Wright allowed a sac fly to Jaxon Willits. Wright recorded 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, earning his first career win. Sean Fitzpatrick made his pro debut in the sixth inning, and the left-hander threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout. Jordan Valenzuela struck out four batters in two scoreless innings, holding the lead. Yoesmerli Beltre earned the save with a scoreless ninth. 

DSL Padres Gold (Won 4-2 vs DSL Reds) (2-1 in DSL Cup Finals) 

Yorvin Morla – 1-for-4, Go-Ahead Single

Jeanfranco Fernandez – 1-for-3, RBI Double

Josias Figuereo – 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K 

The DSL Padres Gold pulled off the comeback to become the undisputed DSL Cup champions for a second year in a row. Josias Figuereo was tasked with starting the winner-take-all game and pitched three innings of one-run baseball. Figuereo struck out two, and the Padres Gold bullpen stepped up. Wilfred Paca threw 2.1 scoreless innings, and Albert Perez struck out three batters in 1.2 innings.
The Padres Gold took the lead in the sixth inning, as Dawry Guerrero doubled to open the inning. Guerrero scored on a double from Jeanfranco Fernandez, tying the game. After Gabriel Teran reached on a fielder’s choice, he moved to second on a stolen base before scoring on a single from Yorvin Morla, giving the Padres Gold the lead. The team got themselves some insurance in the eighth, as Dayquer Alfonzo hit an RBI single and Cristian Benavides hit a sac fly to extend the lead to 4-1. Guillermo Romero got two outs in the eighth, but with two on, Albieris Polanco was called on. Polanco got out of the inning, and despite a solo home run allowed to open the ninth, Polanco got the job done. The right-hander got Elder Martinez to fly out to center fielder Endy Rios to kick off the celebrations at the Padres’ DR Complex.
