It was the Padres chance at their first sweep of the season to finish off the homestand.

The sweep and a chance at a four-game winning streak would not be for the San Diego Padres.

Padres starter Yu Darvish labored across a short start against the Marlins, going only three i,nnings allowing three runs (two earned).

The Padres bullpen did not fare much better, allowing six runs across the remainder of the game.

The lack of swing-and-miss was a sign of problems for Darvish, as only 25% of swings resulted in swinging strikes. The Marlins would score three runs off Darvish in the second and third innings, with the third run coming across on a throwing error by Manny Machado (his first misplay of the year defensively).

After the game, Padres manager Mike Shildt would reveal that Darvish was pulled from the game with hamstring tightness, and is undergoing testing before the team departs for their six-game road trip.

The Padres’ bullpen did not fare any better in the remainder of the game, as noted above. Stephen Kolek would allow three earned runs as batters would tee off on his off-speed pitches, and Enyel De Los Santos would allow four hits of his own across 1.1 innings. Jhony Brito would pitch the last 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits in that span. Combined, the three pitchers would throw 93 total pitches, but only ten whiffs would come.

While the Padres bullpen did not fare as well as it had over the rest of the month of May, these three pitchers helped the Padres save their bullpen.

On the offensive side of the baseball, the Padres’ lone run would come on a homer by Ha-Seong Kim, his seventh of the year.

The Padres had a tough time against Marlins starter Braxton Garrett; even though they only struck out twice, they were 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base in the game. Garrett was known for soft contact and ground balls entering the game, and he lived up to that reputation today. The Padres were only able to get three baserunners in four innings against the Marlins bullpen, who recorded their most clean outing of the series. Miami relievers pitched four scoreless innings in the game, concluding a 9-1 win for Miami.

The Padres get set to depart for a six-game road trip, starting out with three games against the upstart Kansas City Royals. Dylan Cease is set to start for San Diego in the series opener, tentatively against former Friar Michael Wacha. The first pitch is set for 5:10 pm Pacific time.
