The Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres squared off on Tuesday in the middle game of this three-game series at Petco Park.

The Padres dropped Monday’s Memorial Day game in a disappointing 3-0 loss. On Monday, San Diego’s offense went a horrid 0-10 at the plate with runners in scoring position.

Randy Vásquez looked to get the Padres back on track after dropping their previous two. Last outing for Vásquez was against the Dodgers, and he would go 4 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs on six hits, while striking out none.

Veteran Aaron Nola would start for interim manager Don Mattingly‘s Phillies. Nola has struggled so far in 2026, posting a 6.04 ERA in 10 starts.

Tuesday’s lineup

Miguel Andujar drops to the five spot in the order after batting second regularly since May 17th.

Phillies rally with two outs

In Vásquez’s first three innings of work, he would retire the first two men with ease, then allow a solo home run. Bryce Harper, JT Realmuto and Trea Turner would all hit two-out solo shots to make the score 3-0 Phillies early on.

After the Turner homer in the third inning, Vásquez let three consecutive base runners on base to extend the Phillies advantage to 4-0.

Merrill flashes the leather

Jackson Merrill leaps up and takes away a home run from Edmundo Sosa.

Manny cuts the lead in half

Manny Machado lasers a first-pitch sinker from Nola over the left field wall to to drive in Gavin Sheets and get San Diego on the board in the bottom of the fourth.

Vásquez settles in

Minus those two-out rallies from Philadelphia in innings 1-3, Randy Vásquez was very solid in Tuesday’s outing. In the end, Vásquez threw 5 2/3 innings, totaling for 99 pitches with 65 of them being for strikes. Vásquez allowed eight hits, four earned runs, while walking one batter and striking out two. Seven of those eight hits would come with two outs in the inning. Vásquez only got six swing-and-misses against the Phillies offense.

Ramón tacks on another

Ramón Laureano hits his seventh home run of the year to edge the Padres closer in the eighth.

Ballgame 4-3

Electric closer Jhoan Duran induces a 1-2-3 inning as Andujar, Merrill and France go down in order. Duran slams the door on the Padres and this win would secure a series win for the Phillies.

Wrap-up

Phillies’ Aaron Nola will improve his 2026 record to 3-4 after his six strong innings on display on Tuesday night.

Randy Vásquez would receive his third loss of the season after allowing four earned runs.

Jhoan Duran locked up his 11th save for the Phillies’ 28 win of 2026.

Bradgley Rodriguez, Wandy Peralta, and Adrian Morejon all tossed scoreless innings from the seventh to the ninth.

The Phillies will improve to 28-27 as the Padres fall to 31-23 on the 2026 season.

Day baseball on Wednesday

The Phillies and Padres will play day baseball on Wednesday for the series finale in this late May series. The impressive left-hander Christopher Sanchez will take the mound for the Phils. Walker Buehler will pitch for the Padres, against the team that he tossed 13 2/3 innings for a season ago. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM PT.
