When head coach Sean Lewis named O’Neil the starting quarterback before the 2024 season, he said it was because the signal caller gave the Aztecs the best chance to win and was not about preparing O’Neil for the future. That narrative proved accurate with today’s announcement.Â
Lewis has spoken publicly about the need to bring in a transfer or two to the QB room. With three years left of eligibility, O’Neil, recovering from surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, decided to leave the team. Â
The freshman started 11 games in 2024 and threw for 2,181 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He led the team to two victories in his first four starts and was in a position to win in a third before leading the team to six straight defeats to end the year.Â
His departure means Kyle Crum is the only remaining signal caller from the 2024 roster still on the team. True freshman JP Mialovski is expected to enroll at the end of January.Â
My earliest sport’s memory involve tailgating at the Murph, running down the circular exit ramps, and seeing the Padres, Chargers and Aztecs play. As a second generation Aztec, I am passionate about all things SDSU. Other interests include raising my four children, being a great husband and teaching high school.
