San Diego Padres affiliates went 2-5 on Thursday.

Here’s a recap of the night’s action.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 9-6 vs Albuquerque) (28-38 on the season)
Matthew Batten – (2-for-4) RBI
Nate Mondou – (1-for-5) 2-RBI Double
Jackson Wolf – 3.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 0 K (66 pitches, 34 strikes)

Jackson Wolf struggled in his start, coming undone in the fourth inning, surrendering four runs in what would become a nine-run fourth inning. Entering the frame with a one-run lead, Wolf would load the bases before uncorking a wild pitch to score the tying run. A two-run triple followed by a pop-up would spell the night for Wolf, who now has a 16.20 ERA in his last two starts. Alek Jacob allowed five runs in relief, but only one was earned as a result of two errors by Chihuahuas infielder Mason McCoy. Tom Cosgrove and Lake Bachar pitched one scoreless inning apiece. For Cosgrove, he now has eight consecutive outings without allowing an earned run.

The offense did its job in attempting a comeback. Nate Mondou recorded a two-RBI double, and Matthew Batten recorded two hits and an RBI. Catcher Kevin Plawecki recorded a home run, and Mason McCoy scored two runs. The offense as a whole went 2-for-9 with runners on. Opening Day Padres Graham Pauley and Eguy Rosario each reached base once in the game.

San Antonio Missions (Won 5-1 vs Corpus Christi) (28-31 on the season)
Ripken Reyes – (2-for-2) 2 RBI
Clay Dungan – (1-for-3) RBI, Double
Jared Kollar – 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K (89 pitches, 59 strikes)

Another quality start from Jared Kollar led the Missions to a win against the Corpus Christi Hooks. The right-hander continued his hot start to the season with six innings of one-run ball, striking out four. Kollar showed his command in the game, walking only one and not getting into many deep counts, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the third inning. It was the sixth time in 12 starts that Kollar has allowed one earned run or less. In relief, Padres No. 17 prospect Cole Paplham made his season debut at Double-A, striking out two in a scoreless inning of relief.

The offense was led by Ripken Reyes’ two RBI day. Reyes recorded two hits, including a second-inning two-RBI single. Clay Dungan would record the other RBI hit for the Missions with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly. The team went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position but managed to capitalize on wild pitches and passed balls by the Hooks to score two of their five runs in the win.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 13-6 vs Lake County) (26-34 on the season)
Jay Beshears – (3-for-5) Home Run, Double, 2 RBI
Devin Ortiz – (1-for-3) 2-Run Home Run
Fernando Sanchez – 1.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 0 BB, 0 K (52 pitches, 35 strikes)

Despite throwing 67% of his offerings for strikes, today was not the day for Fernando Sanchez. The TinCaps’ starter was torched for six runs in the second inning, leaving behind a six-run deficit while only recording five outs. Sanchez did not get a single whiff in the troublesome second inning, as batters fouled off ten pitches he threw before recording seven hits. The TinCaps’ bullpen did not fare too much better, with Dwayne Matos allowing four runs in 0.2 innings in relief of Sanchez. One bright spot for the pitching staff was right-hander Tyler Morgan, who tossed 2.2 hitless innings of relief. The 2023 14th-rounder has performed well at Double-A in his first full professional season and could look to make a push for Triple-A by the season’s end.

Jay Beshears was the most notable offensive performer for the TinCaps, falling a triple short of the cycle and hitting his first home run at High-A. Beshears has been a fast riser in the Padres’ system this season, one who our EVT staff writer Clark Fahrenthold had the opportunity to interview earlier this season. Elsewhere in the lineup, Devin Ortiz and Nerwilian Cedeño hit home runs, and Anthony Vilar would record an RBI of his own. However, the team would be unable to capitalize on scoring chances, going 0-for-6 with runners on in the loss

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 4-0 vs Stockton) (29-29 on the season)
Rosman Verdugo – (1-for-3) Walk
Jacob Campbell – (1-for-3) Triple
Sam Whiting – 4.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K (89 pitches, 53 strikes)

The Storm did not bring the thunder in their bats tonight. One night, after scoring 19 in a shutout win, they were shut out by Stockton. Sam Whiting started for the Storm, and he delivered a strong outing, allowing two runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Whiting did not have much of his usual swing-and-miss stuff but battled through base traffic to pitch into the fifth, pulled at 89 pitches. Will Varmette and Xavier Ruiz combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief in the game, striking out two batters each.

The Storm’s bats were held to three hits all game despite walking five times. Rosman Verdugo and Jacob Campbell would each reach base twice via base hit and walk. However, the rest of the offense would be unable to bring in any runs, going a dismal 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Leodalis De Vries and J.D. Gonzalez did not play in this game.

I'd like this amount to

ACL Padres (Won 6-4 vs ACL Rangers) (16-14 on the season)
Kaden Hollow – (2-for-4) Run Scored
Ismael Javier – (1-for-4) Double, Run Scored
Yovannki Pascual – 3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K

Early scoring led the ACL Padres to a victory in Arizona against the ACL Rangers tonight. Despite a 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position, the Padres capitalized on four Rangers errors to aid them en route to a win. In the fourth, back-to-back hit by pitches to B.Y. Choi and L.J. Jones would give the Padres a 4-3 lead, and they would remain ahead the rest of the game. Spence Coffman’s bat and speed helped the Pads get some insurance, as he drove in a run with an RBI single and caused a throwing error on a stolen base, leading to another Padres run.

On the mound, Yovannki Pascual delivered three strong innings, allowing only two runs. Making his first ACL start, the right-hander showed promise, punching out five. Former outfielder Ruben Salinas earned the victory with two innings of relief, allowing zero earned runs. Zac Addikson tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, and Bernand Jose tossed two innings before Adler Cecil struck out two in the ninth to close out the win.

DSL Padres Gold (Lost 12-7 vs DSL Blue Jays) (3-4 on the season)
Yoiber Ocopio – (3-for-4) 2 Runs
Yimy Tovar – (3-for-5) Home Run, 2 RBI
Luis Maracara – 3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 5 K

A seven-run fourth inning had the DSL Padres Gold squad fall behind, unable to close the deficit vs the DSL Blue Jays. Luis Maracara took the mound for his second start of the season, coming off a solid pro debut. The right-hander allowed three runs in three innings, striking out five batters. Reliever Jordan Valenzuela was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs in 0.1 innings pitched. The Padres Gold’s next relievers, right-handers Roberto Burgos and Yoesmerli Beltre, allowed two runs (both unearned) across 5.2 innings, striking out five.

Yoiber Ocopio and Yimy Tovar were the offensive standouts for the Padres Gold, recording six of the team’s ten hits. Ocopio would have a triple, and Tovar would hit his first home run of the season. Around the lineup, Emil Turbi would record an RBI double, and Gustavo Marquez would drive in another run. However, the team would go 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position, stranding ten runners on base in the loss.

DSL Padres Brown (Lost 3-1 vs DSL Brewers 1) (1-5 on the season)
Kevin Tamburini – (2-for-3) Run Scored
Estiven Giron – (1-for-2) RBI
Jimmy Reyes – 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 0 K

The DSL Padres Brown lost a close game against the DSL Brewers 1. The Padres were only able to record four hits in the game, two coming off the bat of Kevin Tamburini. Estiven Giron, playing in his first professional game, would record the lone RBI for the Padres on a first-inning RBI single. The Padres would go 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position but would only score once in the game.

Jimmy Reyes started for the Padres in the seven-inning game and pitched better than the final stat line suggests. Reyes allowed two hits and two unearned runs, with the runs scoring thanks to wild pitches. Reyes was somewhat erratic, tossing two wild pitches, but his outing as a whole would best be characterized as “effectively wild.” Johan Minaya tossed three innings of one-run ball in relief, striking out three batters.
