In a stunning change of heart, Magoon Gwath will come back to San Diego State for his sophomore season
Last week when I wrote that Magoon Gwath would not be returning, I really did think he would choose another school to play for. I, as well as many others, are stunned with this news. On April Fools’ day, Mark Zeigler broke the news that many did not believe at first.
San Diego State fans should be ecstatic that one of the best players in the nation is coming back. Gwath is still declared for the NBA Draft, however, and if he decides to come back to school, it will be at SDSU.
Gwath put the country on notice last season. He was one of the nation’s top shot blockers and showcased his ability to score with three-pointers and buckets in the paint. Gwath slammed home alley-oop dunks and put Viejas Arena on their feet time and time again.
Nick Boyd was the first Aztecs to enter the transfer portal. Gwath followed up days later and had rumors of talks with Kentucky and Michigan, two Blue Blood schools. Gwath could have commanded a ton of NIL money and who knows, maybe the MESA Foundation was able to provide enough for him to want to stay.
Besides just money, SDSU, coached by Brian Dutcher, is a great place for his development. Gwath is a defensive-first player who thrived in this system. Next season, he should grow even more to become one of the best overall big men in the game.
We are all still awaiting the news and potential return of Miles Byrd. If Byrd and Gwath both return, then this team will be deep with experience. There is no way to not believe this team can’t return to the NCAA tournament and even be a high seed once again.
The Aztecs could already be the favorite to win the Mountain West Conference next season.
