Padres affiliates went 1-5 on Thursday.

Let’s dive into the games played. 

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 16-10 vs Albuquerque) (44-60 on the season)

Ethan Salas – 2-for-4, Two Doubles, Two RBI

Carlos D. Rodriguez – 4-for-5, Four Singles, Two RBI

Jagger Haynes – 2.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 3 K (62 pitches – 32 strikes)

The Chihuahuas and Isotopes played in a PCL barn-burner, with Albuquerque emerging victorious. Jagger Haynes started for the Chihuahuas, pitching into the third inning and allowing five earned runs. The southpaw generated whiffs on 33% of swings against him (9/27), and he generated a strong .227 xWOBACon in the outing. Despite this, the left-hander’s four walks issued did not help. Daison Acosta struck out four in 2.1 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run. Ty Adcock allowed one run in two innings of work, generating five ground ball outs. Johan Moreno made his first appearance in five days, but allowed five runs on three hits and three walks. The right-hander allowed a solo home run and the tying run to score, departing the game with the bases loaded and two outs. Michael Flynn allowed a go-ahead single to Connor Capel and walked in a run, ending the inning without allowing a run of his own. Andrew Moore allowed four runs on three hits in the ninth. 

The Chihuahuas’ offense continued to hit well, scoring 10 runs. Ethan Salas hit two doubles in the contest, driving in two runs. Two of Salas’ batted balls came off the bat over 100 mph, with his RBI double in the seventh inning posting a 108.4 mph exit velocity. Salas has hit incredibly well in his first two games in El Paso, and threw out his first baserunner at Triple-A in the seventh. Carlos D. Rodriguez had four singles, driving in two runs. Dustin Harris opened the game with a home run, his first over-the-wall homer as a member of the Padres organization. Mason McCoy reached base three times, scoring three runs. Romeo Sanabria went 1-for-5 with a single and a run scored in the loss. 

San Antonio Missions (Lost 6-4 vs Amarillo) (44-55 on the season)

Ryan Jackson – 2-for-4, Triple, RBI

Kai Murphy – 1-for-3, Home Run, RBI

Ian Koenig – 6 IP, 10 H, 6 R (5 ER), 0 BB, 4 K (88 pitches – 61 strikes)

San Antonio fought hard in a 6-4 loss to the Sod Poodles on Thursday. Missions starter Ian Koenig threw six innings, but was charged with six runs (five earned) on a season-high 10 hits allowed. Koenig only generated five swings and misses, picking up eight ground ball outs. The issue for the right-hander was home runs allowed; Koenig allowed three home runs in the game. His 17 home runs allowed have tied a career-high. Tucker Musgrove threw a scoreless seventh inning, striking out three of four batters faced. Musgrove sat between 96-99 mph on his four-seam fastball, generating seven whiffs from Amarillo batters. Across his last three appearances, Musgrove has pitched four innings with a 9/1 K/BB rate. Harry Gustin threw a scoreless eighth inning in the loss, striking out two batters. 

The Missions lineup struck out 13 times in the game, stranding six baserunners in the contest. Individually, Kai Murphy had himself a day. The Missions’ left fielder went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks. Ryan Jackson reached base twice in the game, hitting a triple and driving in one of four runs. Chris Sargent drove in the team’s first run in the second inning, hitting an RBI single to score Jackson. Braedon Karpathios hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, scoring Tirso Ornelas. Jake Cunningham went 1-for-3 with a single and a walk, scoring one run in the contest. The former Orioles farmhand is slashing .297/.350/.459 over his first 111 at-bats with the Missions. 

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 11-1 vs Great Lakes) (43-55 on the season)

Kerrington Cross – 2-for-4, Double

Kasen Wells – 1-for-4, RBI Single 

Carson Montgomery – 3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 1 K (65 pitches – 37 strikes)

A short start from right-hander Carson Montgomery and a dormant offense snapped the TinCaps’ five-game winning streak on the road in Michigan. The right-hander threw three-plus innings in the contest, striking out one. Montgomery was cruising through three innings, but he failed to retire a batter in the fourth. Montgomery allowed a leadoff single before three straight walks saw Great Lakes score first. A single and a walk later, Great Lakes led 3-0, and Montgomery was relieved by Javier Chacon. The left-hander promptly ended the jam with a pop-up and a ground ball double play to strand the bases loaded. Chacon threw a scoreless fight, and Clark Candiotti threw a scoreless sixth. Candiotti allowed three runs (two earned) in the seventh, and Luis German allowed five runs (two earned) in 1.2 innings of relief. The TinCaps’ offense was held scoreless for eight innings, striking out 13 times in the game. Ryan Wideman singled and walked in the game, while Kerrington Cross went 2-for-4 with a double and a single. Wideman has not yet found his power at the High-A level (two XBH out of 34 hits), but has hit .301 with a .341 on-base percentage in his first month-plus as a TinCap. Kasen Wells hit an RBI single in the ninth inning, scoring Lamar King Jr. Since the All-Star break, King Jr has reached base safely in all seven games he has appeared in, posting a .300 OBP in that span. 

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 5-3 vs Stockton) (52-47 on the season)

Truitt Madonna – 2-for-4, Home Run, Two RBI

Yimy Tovar – 2-for-3, Triple, Run Scored

Lan-Hong Su – 3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K (55 pitches – 34 strikes)

Right-hander Lan-Hong Su pitched into the fourth inning for the first time as a professional, striking out three in 3.2 innings. The right-hander has found his command earlier in games, and it has allowed him to get the most from his pitch mix. Su picked up three strikeouts as mentioned previously, generating 11 swings and misses. All three punchouts came swinging, and he only walked one. Zack Qin took the loss, allowing a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Isaiah Lowe allowed two runs in two innings of relief, and Jordan Valenzuela pitched a scoreless eighth for the Storm, fanning one batter. Yimy Tovar had two hits in the contest, hitting a triple and scoring a run. Tovar scored on Qrey Lott’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, tying the game at one. Jorge Quintana hit a double and scored a run in the game, and Yoiber Ocopio hit his 14th double of the season in the game. Coincidentally, for both Ocopio and Quintana, their doubles were each’s 14th of the season. Truitt Madonna had two hits for the Storm, including a ninth-inning two-run home run. For Madonna, the home run was his second in four games, and he has gone 5-for-18 with two homers and a double since rejoining the Storm. 

ACL Padres – No Official Game, Bridge League Game vs ACL Reds

David Morgan pitched a rehab inning in the ACL Padres’ bridge league opener against the ACL Reds. Michael Salina pitched in relief of Morgan, though his exact performance is not publicly known. Second-round pick Elliot Lascelles led off for the ACL Padres in their contest, making his unofficial debut. 

DSL Padres Gold (Won 11-6 vs DSL CLE Mendoza) (30-12 on the season)

Sebastian Nadales – 3-for-4, Two Doubles, RBI

Darian Castillo – 1-for-4, Two-Run Home Run

Yunny Tovar – 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K

A six-inning outing in the DSL? Yes, you read correctly. Left-hander Yunny Tovar allowed no runs in six innings of work against the DSL CLE Mendoza squad, striking out six. Tovar picked up six ground ball outs and has now fanned 11 across his last 11 innings (two starts). Edwyn Hernandez allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning, and Jose Perez struck out one in 1.1 scoreless innings. Joseph Uzeta allowed three runs in one inning, sealing the win. Timothy Mogen put the Padres Gold on the board with an RBI groundout, but a five-run fifth saw the Padres take the wheel. Dayquer Alfonzo hit an RBI single, and Sebastian Nadales was walked with the bases loaded. Timothy Mogen was hit by a pitch to score another run, and Angel Mejia reached on an error to score two. Darian Castillo hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, and Endy Rios tripled to score two more, with Rios going on to score on a wild pitch. 

DSL Padres Brown (Lost 16-3 vs DSL Royals Ventura) (9-32 on the season)

Jeanfranco Fernandez – 2-for-4, Two Singles

Luis Rodriguez – 1-for-3, Two-RBI Single

Yohn Melendez – 1.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R (7 ER), 1 BB, 1 K

Padres starter Yohn Melendez allowed eight runs in 1.2 innings in the loss. Melendez fanned one and walked one. Gensy Aquino allowed two runs in 2.1 innings, and Luis Morales allowed four runs on five walks while picking up four outs. Valentin Perez was the Padres’ lone arm to throw a scoreless outing, with 1.1 scoreless innings. Jeanfranco Fernandez had two singles in the game, scoring a run. Luis Rodriguez drove in two runs on a two-RBI single. The base hit was one of the Padres Brown’s two hits with runners in scoring position.
