The San Diego Padres (58-55) looked to bounce back in a major NL West series vs the Arizona Diamondbacks (60-53). For the Padres, Randy Vasquez is on the mound for the start after being moved into the bullpen. The Diamondbacks feature all-star Eduardo Rodriguez.

Padres offense comes out of the gates hot

After only driving across one run yesterday, the Padres’ offense had to feel they were due for some early success today. Pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez came into the day with a 4.91 ERA in the first inning of his starts, with the rest of his innings being sub-two. Two things were brewing in the Padres’ favor to start game two of this massive series.

In the top of the first, it got started with leadoff man Fernando Tatis Jr lacing a double down the left field line. Luis Rengifo would then fly out to left. However, Manny Machado would come through and replace Tatis Jr on second with a double of his own to left, bringing across the first run of the game. Next up was Ty France, who would ground out sharply to third for the second out of the inning.

Allowing some two-out thunder from Jackson Merrill and Xander Bogaerts. Merrill singled to right, scoring Machado, which advanced him to second on the throw. Bogaerts, with a single up the middle, brought Merrill across for a 3-0 San Diego lead. Freddy Fermin flew out to center to end the first.

Hot start carries over into the second inning

San Diego kept the bats rolling into the second. Jake Cronenworth kicked it off with a leadoff single to right. Then, Jase Bowen managed a bunt single on a miscommunication between Eduardo Rodriguez and first baseman Tim Tawa. Following them was Fernando Tatis Jr., who hit a grounder to third baseman Nolan Arenado. Arenado managed to tag Cronenworth out on his way to third, and tried to get Tatis Jr out at first but was not in time. Luis Rengifo hit a hard grounder up the middle, which was stopped by Ketel Marte, who ended up booting the ball and allowing all runners to be safe.

With bases loaded, Manny Machado got an opportunity to add to his RBI total on the day. Machado got a Texas leaguer to shallow right to bring across Bowen and Tatis Jr., extending the Padres’ lead to five. Ty France would strike out swinging for out number two. Jackson Merrill would double up his RBI total on the day with a 103.5 MPH single into right field after a ten-pitch battle. Driving in Machado as the sixth run in the first two innings.

Machado gets RBI number four on the night as the Padres keep piling it on

Tonight is just one of those nights for Manny Machado. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Luis Rengifo got an infield single to third. He would then steal second base. This allowed Machado to push a single up the middle to score Rengifo for more insurance. Machado’s fourth RBI on the night and a 7-0 lead for the Friars.

The seventh was more of the same. Reliever Ryan Thompson would start the inning for Arizona. To start, Jackson Merrill would get a single to center. Xander Bogaerts then worked a walk; unfortunately, during the at-bat, Xander fouled a ball off his left foot and would leave the game. Sung-Mun Song would pinch run. Bogaerts missed time last season with a fractured left foot after fouling a ball off of it. With runners on first and second, no outs, Freddy Fermin lined a double into left-center, bringing in Merrill and advancing Song to third. That would do it for Diamondbacks reliever Thompson; Paul Sewald would come in to try and clean up the mess. Jake Cronenworth would pop out to short for the first out of the inning. Jase Bowen would then work a walk to load the bases. New acquisition Gage Workman from the Tigers would pinch hit for Tatis Jr. He would strike out swinging. Luis Rengifo would pop out to Nolan Arenado to finish the seventh.

Randy Vásquez delivers

Another great sign out of this game was the performance by Randy Vásquez. Never had an inning where the blood pressure got up, working clean and efficiently. Weak contact and great command were the strengths in silencing Arizona’s great offense. He would finish the night with six innings pitched, giving up two hits, one walk, no runs, and grabbing one strikeout.

Diamondbacks grab four runs in a hurry

Wouldn’t be a Padres game without a very nerve-wracking inning. In the bottom of the seventh, German Marquez would come in relief for Randy Vasquez. Jorge Barrosa would start with a leadoff single. Marquez would then strike out Ketel Marte for the first out of the seventh. But Nolan Arenado would get a big swing off of his former Colorado teammate with a two-run shot to left for the first runs of the game for Arizona.

Next up was Lars Nootbar, who worked a walk. Tim Tawa, who had a big night last night, wasn’t successful in creating some action as he was shut down by Jake Cronenworth, who made an amazing diving play to get a force out at second. However, James McCann would make things interesting with another two-run home run to left, making it 8-4 Padres. Ryan Waldschmidt became another baserunner for Marquez after getting a single to left. Fortunately, Corbin Carroll would ground out to second to close out the frame.

One more insurance run to help close things out to even the series

In the ninth, the Padres would grab one more run for safe measure before closing it out. With runners on first and second, Jake Cronenworth would hit a grounder past the first baseman, Tim Tawa, to bring in run number nine on the night for the faithful.

Griffin Canning would come in to finish this one off. Forcing a Nolan Arenado pop out to second, and getting Lars Nootbar and Tim Tawa to ground out to second for the Padres’ 9-4 win. Evening up the season series and sitting one game back of Arizona for a wildcard spot. Setting up an epic showdown tomorrow night with a new face set to debut for the Padres.

Looking to grab the series lead

The San Diego Padres (59-55) will continue the series vs the Arizona Diamondbacks (60-54) in game three of the four-game set. For the Padres, they have their shiny new toy in trade deadline acquisition Casey Mize on the mound. Mize has had a very solid season so far, looking to start on the right foot with San Diego. The Diamondbacks have Mitch Bratt to counter. First pitch is at 6:40 PM PT at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
