Padres, Carter Capps Avoid Arbritration
The San Diego Padres and Carter Capps avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $1,062,500 contract for the 2018 season.
The agreement between the two parties was first reported by Jon Heyman of FanRag sports.
Capps underwent Tommy John surgery and missed a vast majority of the 2017 season.
He made his San Diego Padres debut on Aug. 7, allowing three runs on two walks and a hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Capps appeared in 11 games for the Padres in 2017 after spending the majority of the year in the minors. He posted a 6.57 ERA over 12.1 innings pitched for the big club and was a bit underwhelming.
On Sept. 12, he was diagnosed with a blood clot after experiencing pain in his right side. He was placed on the 60-day disabled list and his season ended.
On Sept. 25, the club announced that Capps would have thoracic outlet syndrome surgery during the offseason.
He is expected to return in the 2018 season at full speed.

This extension should be a sign that the Padres are hopeful that not only can Capps make a full recovery, but he can give them the kind of production that he is expected.
Capps posted a 1.16 ERA with a 48-to-7 K/BB ratio while with the Miami Marlins. The Padres acquired Capps from Miami in a 2016 trade that sent Colin Rea, Tayron Guerrero and Andrew Cashner to Miami in exchange for Capps, Jarred Cosart, Josh Naylor and Luis Castillo.

Capps had already undergone Tommy John surgery when he was acquired, so his future is a bit cloudy.
His modified delivery is also an issue as he just doesn’t look like the same dominant pitcher as he was in Miami. At 27, Capps still has plenty of time to turn into a very useful reliever. The 2018 season will be huge for this right-handed pitcher.
