Over two months have passed since San Diego FC last won a game in any competition. SDFC has three consecutive home games before the World Cup break to try and get that elusive win.

San Diego will host Austin FC for a game in the 2026 MLS regular season this Wednesday, May 13. SDFC even has a great opportunity to start turning the season around and end the first half on a high note in this next home stand.

This first game is crucial for that change, as there have been slight signs of improvement in the last couple of games for SDFC. Mikey Varas’ team has tied its last two games against some of the top teams in MLS, LAFC and Seattle Sounders.

The Azul and Chrome side has been very close to winning these games, but has been unable to hold onto the results. The game against LAFC was especially frustrating as the Los Angeles club tied the game in the final moments of the match.

Seattle was also able to get a late 80th-minute goal to tie the game at Lumen Field. The defensive inconsistencies that have plagued SDFC were very present in that game against Seattle.

San Diego allowed 26 shots against the Sounders, but luckily, goalkeeper Duran Ferree had a significant effort in net. Ferree was benched for CJ dos Santos against LAFC, but is now the starting goalkeeper once again after dos Santos suffered a nose injury.

While it seemed that Ferree lost a bit of confidence in San Diego FC’s winless streak, he certainly seemed to regain that against Seattle. Varas has certainly put his trust in the young shot-stopper,r and it will be interesting to see his follow-up performance.

Marcus Ingvartsen scored his eighth goal of the season against the Sounders, as he has already quadrupled his tally from 2025. It was the Danish striker’s fourth goal scored in his last five games, as he has been the biggest offensive producer as of late for San Diego FC.

Anders Dreyer did not have a goal contribution in this last game, and his production certainly needs to increase for SDFC to have more success.

The Azul and Chrome side is now winless in 10 consecutive games, and the pressure is starting to pile on Varas. There seems to be a current disconnect between the team and the fan base, which has affected recent attendance numbers.

The support is still there for San Diego FC, but there has been an undeniable decrease in the last couple of months. This is a crucial point in the season, and it will be vital to end the first half on a positive note.

Austin FC has only been slightly better than San Diego FC, currently just a point ahead of the Southern California side. The Texas-based team is in a groove, currently on a three-game undefeated streak, coming off a 2-2 draw against Minnesota United.

Myrto Uzuni currently leads Austin FC with five goals scored, while Facundo Torres leads the team with five assists. Ilie Sanchez is another key player for Austin in the midfield, as this team has the potential to give SDFC a good fight at Snapdragon Stadium.

However, San Diego is still the favorite with the home-field advantage, as a negative result would be highly disappointing here.
