The Peoria Javelinas continued their regular season in the Arizona Fall League over the weekend, and five Padres prospects saw action in the weekend’s slate of games.

Most Padres players who saw game action over the weekend saw action at the plate and in the field.

The most notable performances came from breakout slugger Romeo Sanabria and the uber-talented Ethan Salas.

Sanabria has been a hitting machine all season long, regardless of where he played, and he has kept up the pace here. The left-handed hitter roped two singles on the day, with his third-inning single clocking in at a surreal 109.1 mph. His first single of the day wasn’t cheap either, as the ball left the bat at 92 mph as well. Sanabria, a former 16th-round pick, continues to showcase an ability to hit for average, but his slugging will need to show improvement in 2025 for him to keep rising in the Padres’ system, given his lack of positional versatility. While contact-hitting first basemen have shown an ability to succeed in the majors (see John Olerud), the modern offensive environment and philosophy calls for slugging, and that is a tool Sanabria can continue to improve.

Ethan Salas had yet another good day in the AFL, reaching base twice in the Javelinas’ 5-4 win on October 19. Salas showed more of his high-grade plate discipline with a walk and an opposite-field single on a fading changeup away. Salas knows how to stay within himself at the plate, and his minor adjustments at the plate in the AFL are paying off in spades, which could position him for a monster 2025 in the minors.

Leo De Vries and Brendan Durfee went hitless in their game appearances on October 18. De Vries reached base twice in the game via the walk, and while he was held off the tally in the stolen base column, his eye at the plate continued to show in all his plate appearances.

Only one of four Padres pitchers toed the rubber over the weekend in Arizona, that pitcher being David Morgan.

The right-hander (and No. 29 prospect per MLB Pipeline) continued to rack up the punchouts, generating five whiffs on the day. Morgan struck out three batters and walked two in his inning of work, displaying a microcosm of the pitcher he has been thus far in his career: impressive velocity and swing-and-miss, but also prone to walks. Morgan leaned on his fastball and slider (which read as a cutter per the pitch tracking) to generate the strikeouts, and the 24-year-old (25 on 10/26) projects to be a strong presence against right-handed batters on his way to the Majors.

The Javelinas return to action Tuesday night against Glendale at Peoria Sports Complex.
