San Diego State and Fresno State were ranked number one and two in the Mountain West conference standings before the doubleheader on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs coming into the games had won 13 of their last 15 games with some incredible come-from-behind wins.
The Aztecs were hoping to stop the hot streak, and it looked like they would for most of the day.
Game 1 of the doubleheader was a good old-fashioned pitchers’ duel.
Cece Cellura made the start for the Aztecs and continued her momentum from her series in Reno. She went 5.1 innings, giving up four hits and allowing only one run. The Bulldogs’ opener, Hannah Oretga, went 2.2 innings before getting pulled for Keyannah Pu’a.
The deciding factor in the game came on an absolute moon shot of a home run by Grace Uribe. The two-run homer was a sigh of relief for Uribe as she really struggled in Reno, not getting on base all weekend. Dee Dee Hernandez then came in with a one-run lead and shut the door on the Bulldogs with a final score of 2-1.

For most of Game 2, it seemed like it was going to follow a similar path to its predecessor. The Bulldogs opened up the scoring in the top half of the fifth inning with a solo shot by Taryn Irigoyen.
The Aztecs then came to the plate in the bottom half of the inning and put up three runs to take the lead.
Jazmin Williams and Quin Waiki reached base to open up the inning. With one out, Bella Espinoza laid down a bunt to advance the runners, and the pitcher overthrew the first baseman, leading to the first run. With a base open, Fresno State elected to put Cali Decker on first with a four-pitch intentional walk. Jade Ignacio then stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and ripped the ball up the middle to score two.

After finishing the fifth, Uribe was pulled for Hernandez, who started the sixth. Uribe only gave up one hit and one run against the Bulldogs. She was doing a fantastic job in the circle, keeping them off balance.
Hernandez came in and struggled, only getting one out before being pulled for Cellura with the Aztecs now down by a run. Unfortunately for the Aztecs, the scoring did not stop for Fresno. The Bulldogs put up another three spot in the top half of the seventh inning.
The Aztecs would end up losing 7-3 in game two.

San Diego State has really struggled to score runs over the past week. Cali Decker’s recent struggles do not help the Aztecs, which could correspond with the offensive woes.
One of the highlights from the doubleheader was Waiki’s defensive plays. Waiki made back-to-back insane plays to help out her pitching staff. The Aztecs are now in trouble when it comes to potentially getting an auto bid into the tournament if they do not win the MW Tournament later this season.
San Diego State will travel to Fort Collins for a quick two-game set against Colorado State starting this Saturday, April 5, at noon.
