Fleet Hire Mike DeBord as Offensive Coordinator
The San Diego Fleet has been one of the more active teams during the first preseason of the Alliance of American Football league
Trades and personnel moves have kept things very interesting. In order to fill the void left by former offensive coordinator Jon Kitna, who departed to become the quarterback coach for the Dallas Cowboys, the Fleet has hired another Mike Martz understudy.
Introducing your 2019 San Diego Fleet offensive coordinator: Mike DeBord. It’s not very surprising when you see that DeBord worked as an assistant coach under Martz with the Chicago Bears while Martz was the offensive coordinator.
DeBord has most recently held the same position with the Indiana University (2017) and the University of Tennessee (20015-17). In December, DeBord announced his retirement from football. The 62-year-old Muncie, Indiana native is trading retirement for sunshine and a fresh start with a new team in a new league.
You can’t really blame him.
Taking one look at DeBord’s resume shows you why this would be the perfect opportunity. He’s worked in football for decades in many different capacities. From the administrative side to the coaching side, football is what he knows. For Martz to bring him in this late (after Kitna’s departure) is a great vote of confidence.
Much like Kitna, one can expect that Martz is looking for someone who has worked in his system and can be a great communicator. It has yet to be seen who will be calling the plays, but rumors are it will be Martz himself.
With the final piece (back) in place, we are nearing the first game of the season for our San Diego Fleet on February 9. The team will be looking to come out firing and take their first game on the road in San Antonio. Let’s hope that DeBord’s offense will have garnered the continuity they need to make this first season a success.
I’m a life long sports enthusiast. A Bay Area native I married a So Cal babe and we planted our roots in San Diego. I’ll trade a crowded beach with warm waves over a cold one with great whites any day! My next adventure is teaching my three sons to surf.
If I’m not writing about Fantasy Football, MLB or San Diego Fleet you will find me smoking and slow cooking meat.
Great things are afoot in the sporting realm for San Diego sports enthusiasts and EVT is here to cover it!
Just read your post about the new OC hire for the San Diego Fleet. A correction…It’s Indiana University not University of Indiana. (It’s a common mistake). I’m a Hoosier both by birth and an alum. Coach Debord was at IU for two years. I’ve been a sports fan my whole life (Chicago area.) Good luck to you and welcome to San Diego.
