Coors Field – Colorado
The San Diego Padres continue their away stand with game one of a four-game series against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
The Padres are undefeated over their last two series. Right now, they’re 2.5 games above the Diamondbacks and don’t seem to be slowing down. If they continue playing as well as they have, a playoff spot is practically secured.
Casey Mize is on the mound. As is tradition to mention at this point, Mize hasn’t been so hot as a Padre. At least, nothing like how he was as a Detroit Tiger. Still, each start is a new chance to make it up. While Coors Field can be a pitcher’s nightmare, it’s also a place Mize could use his naturally strong command to his advantage.

However, the Rockies’ early hitters erased that lead almost immediately.

It didn’t seem to matter anyway; the Padres’ late hitters put together a nice string of at-bats to bring themselves back up a run.
Jackson Merrill, named the NL player of the week this Monday, got the rally started with a single to right field. That week, he smashed 3 homers and knocked in 12 runs, collecting a 1.521 OPS.
Not long after, Freddy Fermin hit a sac-fly that scored another run.
The,n on two outs, Fernando Tatis Jr. connected his 22nd homer of the year.

This is his fifth homer in the last 12 games. By the end of the second inning, the Padres held a four-run lead.
Mize, safe in the hands of run support once again, continued his outing rather cleanly. That said, the Padres’ defense at Mile High Stadium was particularly great at preventing multiple Rockies runners from scoring.
He wasn’t perfect, but certainly handled things better than previous starts.
Meanwhile, the Padres continued putting the pressure on Tomoyuki Sugano. He left after the fifth inning; the Padres tagged him for six runs total.
Mike lasted just as long as Sugano but surrendered four fewer runs.
However, the game got closer after Kyle Hart allowed three runs, bringing the Rockies within striking distance. Bradgley Rodriguez had to enter to keep the Padres on top.
Ty France settled the score on his turn, a single to knock in Dustin Harris. This was France’s first game back after coming off the paternity list. On the night, France went 3-for-5 with an RBI.
We have reinstated INF Ty France from the paternity leave list and optioned INF Mason McCoy to Triple-A El Paso.

Calling the rest of the show a game of cat and mouse would be an understatement. The Padres and Rockies tagged each other for a run in nearly every inning following the sixth.
However, in the ninth, with both teams down to their last outs, the Padres ended with an 8- 7 lead.
The four-game series continues Tuesday evening. Walker Buehler (8-6, 4.61 ERA) starts for the Padres, and Kyle Freeland (4-10, 6.37 ERA) takes the mound for the Rocks.
