A couple of hours after San Diego State University put out an official release of the returning Aztecs, head coach Brian Dutcher and Co. landed a commitment from Chance Gladden from the transfer portal.

Gladden is a freshman from Boston University who chose the Aztecs over NC State, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M, among others. The 6-foot-4 freshman averaged 14.4 PPG, 4.5 APG, and 3.2 RPG on 48/35/87 splits last season.

The advanced numbers are not the greatest, but the young guard from North Carolina came up huge for Boston down the stretch in some big-time games. The game came against Navy in the Patriot League Semifinal on the road. Gladden had 26 points and four assists along with the game-winning three as time expired.

Here are some notable honors he received during and after the season.

  • Patriot League Rookie of the Week (1/5/26)
  • 2026 All-Patriot League Third Team
  • 2026 Patriot League All-Rookie Team
  • 2026 Patriot League All-Tournament Team

Gladden is expected to fill a backup role with the announcement of Elzie Harrington returning to the Mesa. He is a talented scorer who loves to work out of the mid-range in the Pick-and-Roll. According to Mark Zeigler of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Aztecs are expected to land a European Pro. Along with the European Pro, a post player from the domestic portal could be on the Mesa in the coming days.

The Aztecs have been very close to the vest when it comes to who they have an interest in. The past three commits of this cycle have come from players the Aztecs’ fans had no known interest in. Aztec fans may be frustrated with that sense, but one thing is for sure: Dutcher and Co. are doing a great job so far this offseason.
