San Diego FC announced Thursday morning that Emmanuel Boateng has signed a contract extension that will keep him with the club through the 2026 season, with a club option through June 2027.
The announcement reinforces the organization’s commitment to experience, leadership, and long-term cultural development as the club continues to shape its identity.
Sporting Director Tyler Heaps emphasized Boateng’s professionalism, consistency, and extensive MLS experience as central reasons for the decision. According to Heaps, Boateng’s presence provides stability both on and off the field, particularly within a squad that features a growing number of young and developing players.
Within the club, Boateng is viewed as a flagship representative of the Right to Dream Academy pathway. San Diego FC believes his career trajectory and personal example can serve as a blueprint for youth prospects progressing through the academy system. His leadership is expected to be integrated not only at the youth level but also among academy graduates who are already gaining valuable minutes and exposure with the first team.

Boateng has been a fixture in Major League Soccer since 2016. He captured an MLS Cup championship with the Columbus Crew and later added a Supporters’ Shield with the New England Revolution. Across his career, he has accumulated more than 200 MLS appearances, establishing himself as a reliable and respected veteran within the league. That experience has allowed him to become a steady presence within San Diego’s roster, offering insight and perspective that extend beyond matchday contributions.
While Boateng was not relied upon as a key on-field contributor during the second half of the season, his value to the team extends well beyond minutes played. The club recognizes the sentimental and motivational impact he brings to the dressing room, particularly during demanding stretches of the season. In moments of adversity, experienced players often play a crucial role in setting standards, maintaining morale, and demonstrating resilience.
As San Diego FC continues to build toward sustained success, retaining players like Boateng reflects a broader strategy that prioritizes culture, mentorship, and continuity.
